There are no free upgrades to the iPhone 4, you pay the listed price if you want the new device.... and 600k did in part of one day!

OTB
there were free upgrades for people that purchased phones after May 7. if they bought a 16 or 32 gig model they could straight swap untill June 14 or pay the difference if they wanted to go from a 16 to 32 gig model

If you were one of the unlucky ones who bought an iPhone 3GS before Apple dropped the price, AT&T wants to make it up to you. ... The carrier is ... offering a "one-time Customer Price Protection" for anyone who bought a 16GB or 32GB iPhone 3GS in the month before the price drop.
...
You can either get $50 credit for the 16GB or $100 credit for the 32GB ... [or] have the whole purchase price put towards the purchase of a new iPhone. ... Within 30 days of purchase, though, so get a move on. ...
offer expires June 14

Also as you know Apple offers a 30 day cancellation option, so any smart person that purchased in the last 30 days before the announcement would cancel and then reorder a iPhone 4
effectively trading up for free

Well you have to admit Apple is having trouble in the PC end of their business, so it has to look to their toys and phones to help them out....

More on the retina bs
The Truth Behind the iPhone 4 Retina Display

Thanks to his ability to restructure the time-space continuum in accordance with his will, Steve Jobs normally gets away with pushing the credibility barrier a bit during product launches. But when he recently announced that the iPhone 4 sports a “Retina Display,” questions were raised. Were those tiny little pixels really so small that, when the iPhone 4 is vigilantly held a particular number of inches in front of your nose, the human eye cannot detect them? Calculators were whipped out, numbers were crunched, and experts batted about their sometimes-opposing views. We sorted through all the noise, interviewing key players (via email) to bring you the definitive answer. And that answer is: close, Steve, but no cigar.

continue the story here at MACLIFE magazine http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/truth_behind_iphone_4_retina_display

as i said before, it's a misleading claim from S Jobs
one that was not needed because simply saying, it's the best display currently available, would have been enough
but i'm sure he was counting on all the controversy and debates and feature articles.
again his marketing dept did a fine job, all the while continuing the Apple tradition of misleading people and with deception and half truths
all that free press. long live retina display lol

Again you're fact challenged, they're the only PC maker to grow faster than the market did last year.

You're really an insufferable idiot.

More OOOPS!!! from Apple and AT&T

Some iPhone 4 orders being canceled by Apple, AT&T

It’s no secret that Apple, AT&T and anyone else who were offering pre-orders for the iPhone 4 last week suffered from site malfunctions, extended downtime and other problems.

But now it looks like even some of the customers who managed to get through the traffic and pre-order the fourth-gen iPhone online weren’t actually successful as reports are surfacing of randomly canceled orders.

Several tech sites are reporting canceled orders on the part of either AT&T and Apple for a variety of reasons, including unverifiable information, an incomplete authorization process, or sometimes no reason at all. We haven’t seen notes like this from Best Buy yet, but let us know if that happens to you. In these cases, credit cards shouldn’t be charged. But still, talk about completely frustrating.

If you pre-order an iPhone 4 and aren’t so sure about your order status now, check your receipts and call the customer service number of the company you ordered it with just to be sure. And if you haven’t ordered one yet but want one soon (instead of waiting for weeks to get one in the mail), maybe it would be best just to clear your schedule and camp out at your local Apple or AT&T store next weekend.

I did the software upgrade yesterday to iOS 4. Works with my 3GS phone with no issues. The folders feature is really nice. Instead of 7 screens of apps, now 2 with better organization. The wallpaper feature on the home screen is pretty cool as well. Cant wait to see the new phone to compare the speed and screen.

My experience was that ATT delivered the phone a day before launch via FedEx and the phone activated without issue in a couple of minutes....
