Based on your experiences with the iPad, it sounds like I might be able to replace my laptop with this device.
I will for some trips but not all.....

You probably could. I've been playing around with the iPad and find it to be more limited than a netbook and it just costs more....

I see the iPad as a new media device, not a laptop replacement.

I am waiting until an iPad type device comes out that does hand writing recognition (more like a true tablet), but not necessarily with the boot up time of a netbook/laptop.

Also want a webcam on it...have seen a couple of models (in development, on engadget) with webcams (one at the user the other on the other side for phototaking).

Ideally any Office apps would then just be apps, not part of the startup type process so you can do some lightweight office work as well.

At that point (with hand writing) i would see it as a pretty functional media tablet.

Based on other articles that I have read about the iPad, it appears to be ideal for situations where most of your activities center around media consumption rather than media creation.

Battery issues, WiFi issues, 1st gen anything is never a great purchase.
Why Apple didn't put USB or Firewire (they're thing) is beyond me.
Like the 1st gen iPods, this is just a Beta phase.

I like the novelty of it, but will wait awhile till they work out their kinks and add more things to it.

Exactly!!!!!
No USB or Firewire or even mini-Firewire makes no sense.

Bet the 2nd generation will have it...

lol @ the lack of humor.

I can understand why they defend Apple so much, it's because they pay a premium for the product.
Not to say it's not worth it, because I do like their products, in fact, playing with a friends MacBookPro right now and I really do like it.

But lighten up Apple... ;)

My first two were standard Dell and Acer PC's, and after two or three years they were useless. Too much spyware, crashes and the machines just ran so damned-slow all the time. Moreover, they were so idiosyncratic and fussy.
This is the main problem with M$.
You have to do endless security scans to keep it free of all the attacks it's subjected to. Also you have to diligently do your PM to keep Windows clean because of all the crap Windows accumulates during use, that slows it down. If you do these 2 things religiously, Windows will run like new ALL THE TIME! My 13 yr old Pent II runs XP Pro like new still because PM was kept up! Failing to do this will make your PC slow down to a crawl and appear useless.

Of course Linux and OS X using superior OS's and file systems have NONE of these issues that trouble MS.....
