I have been on Terb for years, and all of a sudden all I can get is a message saying that my IP address has been banned. No explanation, just that I have been banned. It says to contact fredzed about it which I have done four times without so much as a reply to my email, nor a PM to me on here. I am currently on the road so I am asking this now so if someone can send me a PM to tell me how to correct this, cuz fredzed apparently doesnt do a damn thing. I think its kind of weird to ban me without any warning, and no explanation, but when it says to contact this person\email (fredzed)for any inqueries about the ban, and still get no reply, no explanation, no nothing, it seems to show a complete lack of character. This happened at least 5-6 months ago as I have been in Euro from Aug till last week so had no real need for it, but I still dont see how to proceed to correct this if possible or an explanation to what I did if it is uncorrectable. And I can say quite certainly that contacting fredzed DOES ABSOLUTELY NFG WHATSOEVER. Any help would be appreciated. Thx

The Snide

P.S. - I know I can still get to Terb as I am now, via a diff IP, but I still want to know what I did cuz I am alone on my IP in TO and can see anyone else causing it. Thx :(

You might consider the tone of your post.

If this is your usual tone you seem to be an ass.

If I was banned with no reason, told to contact someone if I wanted an explanation, tried a few times to do so and never got a response, I might be sounding alittle "off tone" myself........
Maybe we should here both sides of the story before name calling begins
Just saying........

When you are a guest in someones house you show a little respect for them.

Having had the IP banned and obtaining a new IP all he need do is PM Sheik or Fred, ask civilly his question. But realize that today is Christmas and he may not get an answer right away.

I have always found both Sheik and Fred to be fair and even handed.

BTW

I was referring to the tone of his original post and my assessment was based on that.

I believe he mentioned this happened 5 or 6 months ago so no response on xmas day or eve was expected,,
He is a little sharp with his post and maybe better wording could have been used....still, hearing both sides is best before taking one

Waaah!

It's a private board. Fred can, if he wishes, ban anyone with an "I" in their handles on alternate Tuesdays without explanation.

That said, you're on now, contact Fred via PM.

Making this a public rant is useless and argumentative (not to mention against the rules.) Nice.

I would have to say that compared to most posts here, he is downright civil.:)

Yes, it's nice to have a rule that says you can't question the king... after all, if you allow the peasants to question the king, they might realize they're getting oppressed.

Seriously, though... the public rant DOES have a use, it allows a disgruntled user to air his grievance and blow off some steam. Assuming he has a legitimate concern (ie, he was banned over something trivial, or banned in error, or by a mod who has a personal grudge against him), then this is a way to bring it to management's attention.

It also shows that people want to be here badly enough to argue their way back in... which has to be good from Fred's point of view when he's selling ad space.

I think banning, and the reasons behind it, ought to be public. Have a banning discussion forum for it!

The mods have a tough enough time enforcing the rules now without having to endlessly defend their decisions.

Likewise, I doubt Fred has the time to make public pronouncements and defences for every decision or infraction.

Ree Lax.

I too was banned for no apparent reason, with no warning. I emailed the link in the ban to ask who I had offended and Fred responded that they hadn't banned anyone in a while, so I must have a rotating IP.

Fred sent me a link to check my IP and I emailed it back to him. Turns out that IP had been banned 4 or 5 years ago. Apparently Bell Sympatico modulates its IP addresses and my "new address" was co-incidently the same as a previously banned IP address.

The problem was solved quickly and easily.

If you haven't mouthed off, odds are this could be your case. But you have to know yourself.

Since most people connect via cable or telco, and they almost exclusively use DHCP... this would seem to make IP banning ineffectual. I don't expect Fred to invest in modifying the software behind the board, but a least theoretically it would be better to lock a user account and ban new sign-ups from the offending address, not any connection whatsoever.

I suspect that Terb users are a huge minority of local Internet users, so accidental banning by IP address via this method is probably so unlikely we're blessed to have seen one instance of it.

If you block the account, the guy just goes and opens a new account and he's back in business.

The thought is to block the guy from using the board period and assuming he's doing so from home, you block the IP address, you pretty much block the guy unless he wants to change IP, or go to the library.

There's really no fool proof way.

I was going to say pretty much the same the OP probably has a rotating IP, and it had nothing to do with him.

Unless you are paying a premium for a static IP, about 50 a month with Bell, you will get a different IP every time you reboot your computer, or any time your ISP decides you have had the same one for too long

Heaven, definately Heaven

See what happens when the non-computer science, tries to explain "tech", they get all P.O.'d. Sometimes I.P. addresses are banned as a cluster to avoid "bad people" from disabling the system, like spammers, etc. Your address ends up inadvertently inside the cluster of addresses and looks like you are banned. Shut your Ethernet down and turn it back on. That sometimes works.

Get banned from Wikipedia for life and then you're on-to something. LOL

Then again, maybe you were a "bad boy" and you are pissed. :p

thx guys

Thx for the help guys - I'll try the PM route. And I did ask quite nicely in fact just what the prob was in each and every email I sent to fredzed. Not a reply. I didnt even know for sure that it was a real person or just a pseudo. I was just a bit surprised by the ban- and I understand it can be a mistake, or a personal issue with me, a program or security setting, prob with my IP (rogers) or whatever. Hell, I know its their site. It is the message on the ban that says to contact Terb at fredzed for any questions or issues with this IP ban that bothered me. I did so respectfully and repeatedly, and did not get even one answer\explanation, or a PM to me here in 5 months. Have to admit I wasnt too impressed with that. Glad it all worked out for you Kirk, and I have received a PM from others who did get replys from the fredzed email acct. Maybe Ill try PMing Sheik - especially now that I know that the fredzed email doesnt necessarily go to him. Anyways, thx for all who tried to help - peace

It happened to me too last year, something was wrong.

I remember I had to login using a proxy server and I sent a PM to mods.

I don't remember who, how or when it was fixed.

Note: I wasn't banned. :D
