Why would they not? This seems so easy to understand. New York loses money because their star player is injured during the games. What so hard to understand. Its all insurance anyways

I don't see the employers of Russia athlete with the spinal injury getting compensation from the IOC.

Why should the Islanders get any compensation from the IOC?

The answer is simple. The IOC want the best players from the NHL. If the NHL pull their players from the Olympics one of the premier sporting event for the winter games will be tarnished. There was serious debate before these games whether NHL players would participate.

Hockey Canada would have had an insurance policy for every player. Not sure why the IOC would step in. Seems like a dangerous precedent.
Or the cost of doing business (which seems to be IOC's outlook).

Anybody who chooses to compete for an Olympic medal assumes the risks associated with their decision.
Shit happens.

That being said, the hosts should be required to provide the highest possible standards and safety precautions and be held liable for negligence.

The design of the luge track in Vancouver was ridiculous.
People were worried that the track was very fast and dangerous.
So they have massive steel girders lining it after a wicked turn with basically no barrier?
