Using IE and Firefox both browers seem to get stuck and I have to click refresh to clear the blank screen and get the actual page.

IE will try and load the page then in the bottom right it will say "error" then "done" and the screen is blank. Hitting refresh fixes the problem.

This only started recently.

The problem seems to be more prominent when using IE than FF.

Here's what I tried
1) restart the computer
2) power down and restart modem and router
3) checked for updates
4) checked internet connection

No lag time in games like WoW. No problems using torrents.

Any ideas?

In the laboratory.
When I go to Bloomberg.com, I sometimes get odd results. Those go away when I clear my Firefox cache.

Have you tried contacting your ISP and having them trouble shoot for you? Since you have not installed anything, they may have done changes on their side which affect your browsing. There is a possibly this could be a problem with their DNS server not giving proper info to your web browser. Since all your other Internet services (they do not rely on DNS server) work, your internet connection does not seem to be the problem.

If your PC is a laptop, try taking it to a hotel lobby or your workplace and connecting to the internet there. See if you get the same problem.

also try to change settings in IE and FF to always clear browser cache on exit and see if this also fixes the problem.

Did you recently load XP SP3? I've been reading about it's many weird problems.
I have installed XP SP3 and Vista SP1 on many PCs and not had any problems. I made it a point to download the ISO for the service pack, burn to CD/DVD and run the update from it instead of the windows updates. Curious to know if anybody else had problems using XP SP3 or Vista SP1 doing updates this way?
This is a huge update (Remember SP2 was August 25, 2004) so this is almost 4 years of updates which is a huge amount of updates. Microsoft used to release a service pack every year until XP SP2 and Vista came out.

I asked my SO and apparently she updated FF which coincided with the problems. Uninstalled it and just running IE 6 (downgraded after a short and unhappy time with 7). Now things are running much better. Planning on reinstalling FF though to see if the problem comes back because I do prefer it over IE.

My computer stalls as well when loading pages.. maybe it is time to upgrade from Netscape Communicator 4.72
I've used that for years myself.Far better than any IE version. But it was time for a change, and since FF was designed by the same people that gave us Netscape 4.72,there could not have been a better choice.

I installed SP3 at work. It interfered with our accounting s/w so I uninstalled it and since then IE will freeze.

I did not install SP3 athome and have no problems there.

I am not certain that the uninstall of SP3 undoes all of the changes made by SP3.

Have SP3 on a disk and use it to update. Never had a problem yet and have never seen one. Have heard many complain about problems after SP3 installed and have found in every case that it had nothing to do with SP3. Seems to be a legion of folks out there who either imagine or hope for some problem involving Microsoft and SP3. Cannot believe the number of folks who are scared silly about SP3 and who say "that's It!", after i install it for them. Oh well, money in my pocket. Should thank these people!

Firefox 3 is causing lots of problem, specially with certain Plugins (Specially Quicktime) Look at the following links. The last link is more detailed:

You're probably just getting close to the end of the internet - once you reach the beginning again everything will be fine...

You're welcome.

All browsers farkup at times.

Give Opera a try.
I think Opera browser is the best and it's faster than both IE & FF.
