I often delete my internet history

I do this by going in the tools menu in internet explorer.....internet options....deleting history, temporary files and cookies

Is the history stored elsewhere in the computer as well?

If yes is it possible to remove it?

Thanks for your help in advance!

I have Window Washer but I use the same tools menu to delete everything first and then I go into Window Washer to delete it all again. Window Washer seems to delete files from umpteen different places and these are files that didn't get deleted using the method you've outlined. It is only about $20 - $30 per year and it is a quick CC transaction and a download. Recommended for those who value their surfing privacy.

What, pray tell, don't you want found?

The only way to completely eliminate data on your hard drive is to remove it from the computer & physically shred it in very small pieces.

That might put a damper on your system though??

Try using ccleaner and it it free. when you run it, it flages your index.dat file for deletion as well. So this way everytime you reboot a new one is created. If the index.dat file is not deleted it will continually grow and someone who knows how to read a dat file will know what you have been up to

I am no power user and my Window Washer originally came bundled with Spy Sweeper so I just bought it as an extra. I look at the same porn as everyone else and I log onto terb almost daily. I also bank via computer, transfer funds to my RRSP and stock trading accounts etc so I was thinking about a general purpose cleaner that would counter Windows' tendency to save & hide all your secrets for any expert to hack into and copy. If you overwrite blank spaces and use the bleach settings occasionally, Window Washer can keep your information safe from almost anyone. I have no reason to be worried about Homeland Security or federal agencies with serious resources. They'd be bored with me anyway.

Your All Wrong

File Recovery Programs, sometimes enacted Under a Court Order...Will Find All Files That May Be Incriminating In A Civil Case vs say........your Wife.

Do This

When Setting Up Your Computer, Partition The Hard Drive. Lets Say A 160 Gb Harddrive.......split It 40 / 120

In The 40 Side, Load Your Core Programs. Like Xp, Vista, Office Etc.

However...store Files In The Big Side Of Partition....pictures.....files...etc Etc.

When It Comes Time To Negate The Files You Want To Erase., You Must Scrub The Hard Drive Clean (small Partition) Have Your Programs Ready To Reaload, But You Must Wipe It Clean And Reload Programs! No Other Way!!! The big partition stays intact with all your important documents!

Thanks for your advice. Luckily, I don't have much on my computer that would incriminate me if I became embroiled in a divorce proceeding. My banking records would be available to the court in any case and there aren't any secret Swiss accounts or anything I need to worry about. I post in the lounge and politics sections so there's not much there to hang me with either. It is only small time hackers I'm worried about. But when I buy my next computer, I'll ask for that partition so I can cover my tracks if I feel threatened.

You could always do these two things in Tools -> Internet Options:

1) In the General tab, select 0 for 'Days to keep in history'.

2) In the Advanced tab, check the box for 'Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed'.
