Hey all,

I'm going overseas for 5 months and need insurance. I've gotten several quotes. Has anyone used the travel insurance you purchased for a medical emergency? Any reviews or insight as to the ease of use of coverage and claims. There are a lot of horror stories out there.

Would like to find a hassle free and well reviewed company if possible.

Thanks

It seems from me checking travel insurance companies that a lot of them in Canada, use Alliance Global for their claims department. They are based in Kitchener. And yes I have had to deal with them once.

How was the claim process?

They also have very good car insurance rates.
Definitely. Honestly, I don't know why everyone doesn't insure with them. Tons of benefits if you're a member and their rates are cheaper across the board. About 20 years ago, I went to the Co-operators because they offer free insurance rate checking. Told them what I was paying for home and car insurance with CAA and they flat-out told me they couldn't beat the prices I was paying, nor could anyone else in their system.

I was going to say that if you have a premium credit card, they usually include a comprehensive travel emergency insurance coverage if you buy the ticket using that card. However, not for 5 months.

But I also hear CAA is good in terms of settling claims.

Can confirm -- I've filed a few claims with CAA and never had an issue. Honestly, I don't know why everyone doesn't get a membership and use them for insurance. Lots of perks with membership and the rates are as low as you'll see.

I think you mean Allianz Global Assistance. Alliance Global is a conglomerate based in the Philippines

It was a long process, took over a year to settle, but they did!
That's brutal. Im curious; if you have a critical issue requiring serious care/surgery, are you still required to front the total cost. 1k no problem but 20k..... Jesus

I guess it depends on your policy and deductible. My problem was in the US and I didn’t have to pay anything up front. BUT for all procedures that werent standard/normal I had to call the insurance company for the ok to have them done!

CAA is good as long as you’re under 65 and don’t have any pre-existing conditions.

Take a look at a company called Medipac. They're endorsed by the Canadian Snowbirds Association and the Canadian Legion.

Not necessarily. I meet both of these conditions and had no trouble obtaining travel insurance through them. Interestingly though, I didn't qualify by applying only for travel insurance, but did qualify by applying for total package, ie trip cancellation, travel insurance etc.
