If he broke the law, too bad for him.
While I have zero sympathy for the slaveholding bitch, Aardvark is making a strong point about consular immunity. Remember that not all countries have as civilized and open a legal system as the US, Canada and the rest of the West. That Canadian diplomat who gets thrown into a shithole jail in some 'charming enlightened state' may simply have expressed a private opinion that women should be allowed to drive, or bought furniture from a store owned by a personal enemy of the local governor. But I guess, fuck him because he 'broke the law'.

The reality is that this will allow less law abiding xountries to lock up and torture (hey that's how we normally treat prisoners) us diplomatic staff and then justify with trumped up charges. The point of diplomatic immunity is to protect our people who are exposed to real danger in foreign lands- its an important principal

Perhaps this woman was mean to her nanny and underpaid her- and maybe she should be locked up but it was handled very badly

Well hopefully the Canadian Government would stand behind him the way the Indian Government is standing behind her. They are truly incandescent and this stupidity is costing the United States dearly.

you guys are arguing at cross purposes. James is looking at it strictly from what she allegedly did, completely ignoring the context of her purported diplomatic credentials. Obviously, that is entirely at odds with the whole concept of diplomatic immunity and international relations.

What at she did May have been wrong and despicable, but that you can't ignore the reality of the context. We don't want Canadian diplomats eating cockmeat sandwiches in some buttfuck dictatorship country because they think eating pea meal bacon is an abomination to all mankind.

This is déjà vu with my grade 10 social studies class.....

How exactly is this costing the United States dearly?
Lets see:

The Indians are truly and awesomely pissed. They have already taken actions affecting U.S. Consuls and Diplomats and against U.S. Diplomatic and Consular facilities.

India is a critically important politico-military partner of the U.S. in South Asia.

India is now the world's fourth largest economy.

Not very nice places around the world are looking at this and thinking - well if the U.S. can do this why can't we - after all we can hoist the U.S. on its own petard.

The Indians have upped the ante by transferring Dr. Khobragade to their U.N. Mission (hence Diplomatic rather than Consular status).

Another part of the story:

The housekeeper is what is termed an IBDA (Indian Based Domestic Aide) they travel abroad on an Indian Official (Government) Passport*, their travel expenses are paid by the Indian Government, receive Indian Government paid for medical care, home leave back to India etc. . . It is the view of the Indian Government that disputes between Indian Foreign Service Officers and IBDAs are a matter for the Indian Government and legal system.

Further the Indian Embassy in Washington states that when the U.S. contacted the Embassy all of this was stated to the U.S. State Department.

* Passports come in three basic varieties: Personal, Official and Diplomatic.

Well if The Daily Mail is correct you just lost the farm.

They claim she is a Dalit (an Untouchable) I still think from the photographs I've seen that she's much more light skinned than most Dalits.

Mother-of-two, Dr Khobragade studied medicine, her father is a former magistrate and uncle is Indian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea

The untouchables are usually lower than garbage pickers in India.

Her family would seem to defy that.

I doubt she is the lowest of the low. Probably someone just saying that because everyone is whispering the opposite.

In some cultures this sort of behavior is acceptable, fortunately this behavior is less tolerated these days.

Since the 1960's the Indian Government has had a very aggressive affirmative action program - to the extent that a lot of Caste Indians are very resentful of the preferences for Dalits.

Among the stupidest aspects of this is having caused harm to the U.S. relationship with India I predict to you now that this whole things ends with the U.S. promising not to arrest her before she leaves and the Indian Government agreeing to voluntarily recall her.

With the possible option B that the U.S. declares her persona non grata (which of course they could have done in the first place).

Dr. Khobragade was officially indicted today in U.S. District Court, however, the hot rumor is that the the United States has requested that she leave the United States (apparently splitting the difference between the Indian Government withdrawing her and the U.S. declaring her persona non grata).

If so an amazing outbreak of common sense.

Let's say that the law in question is that he should not be left alone unattended in a room with an unrelated female. And he had a female secretary who worked out of his office within the Canadian Consulate. So they both are dragged out of the consulate in chains and thrown into prison.

I think that we would much prefer that the foreign government ask us to withdraw them back to Canada for their "inappropriate" behavior, rather than arrest them.

Well as predicted weeks ago Dr. Khobragade has now left the U.S. for India. The U.S. Attorney's Office says she was requested to leave the United States. The Indian Government says that she was recalled to the Ministry of External Affairs.

What really matters is after a huge diplomatic uproar and real damage to the national interests of the United States. This whole matter was settled as it should have been in the first place.

I am waiting for an Indian Government with an evil sense of humor to appoint her the Indian Ambassador to the United States in a few decades.

India on Friday asked the US to withdraw a consular officer in the consulate section at the U.S. Embassy in New Dehli. The Indian Government is saying that this U.S. Foreign Service Officer was "involved in processes relating to Khobragade case and subsequent unilateral action by US." Regardless of any link it is certainly India saying that it strongly feels the U.S. mishandled this incident.
