Apparently emigration to from Great Britain to North America wasn't covered very well in the Danish educational system (not that I can see much reason why it would be). To remedy the deficiency may I suggest Professor David H. Fischer's Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America Which although it has a few minor errors is otherwise an excellent book.

Here I was about to write something disparaging about the Borders (from whence most in Appalachia are descended). When double checking in the article I see that despite being in the Sun (U.K.) good Lord, they are from Indiana! :frown:
