Watching Rogers Sportsnet last night. Doug MacLean ask this question. With the flames out and the rebuilding a must, the Flames having a weak farm system plus there cap is around 57 mill they will have to dump salaries and trade for the future. How would Iginla look in a Leaf uniform? 42G 43A 85pts

Would you take him if he waved his no trade?

Do we even have anything they (flames) would want from our farm system ?

And no I wouldn't take him, because Ive always wanted to see the leafs build up a farm system and get young players.

I wonder if they would even trade with us anymore after getting burned in the Gilmore trade and to some degree Phaneuf after the way he played down the stetch.

Maybe we can somehow convince Peter Forsberg to come out of retirement and we can have Savard Iginla and Forsberg on the top line ..
I know who they would draft....a trainer lol. they would fit right in with Giggy and the Monster.
I draw the line at Lindros....both of them.

Want to buy Iginla's service eh??? Please be prepared to pay a king's ransom Leaf Nation. Also be prepared for another thread called "Is the Iginla trade the greatest fleecing in NHL history?" in place of the Kessel thread. LOL!!!

I'm a dyed in the wool Leaf fan, with no desire to give up a great deal to aquire Iginla's services.

The cost would probably not be that high, as Calgary is tight against the cap, and part of the benefit of eliminating Iginla's contract would be the available cap space.

It's a moot point anyway, unless Iginla chooses to waive his no movement contract.

Were he so inclined, why would he want to come to another rebuilding team ?

It is far more likely that he would accept a trade to a cup contender.

Iginla would want to be on a potential SC champion or a team that will go deep into the playoffs, and he would probably be a second, maybe a third liner. Detroit or Phily?

Philadelphia is unlikely to be a good fit, they have 18 players under contract for next year already, and only have $1,825,000 in cap space (though, the cap is expected to rise about $2,000,000).

The Wings are a much better economic fit ($12,591,288 in cap space, 15 players signed) though, are they really a cup contender ?
Detroit has serious goaltending issues.

I always thought Iggy would be great as a Leaf........until this year. There was some rumour that Phaneuf and Iggy were at cross purposes in the room. We don't need to transfer that here. Secondly, I don't see the need for a veteran who has his best years behind him, unless there is a leadership gap to fill. That was the old Leafs every year. Bring in another big name player who has peaked and trade away prospects on the way up. Burke should stick with the plan and bring in youth. His theory from the start was that some teams would be forced to trim payroll and would need to let go of good players to do it. Some of those US owners must be really hurting in the US economy? Burke would be ther with cash and cap room to take some legitimate players. Was it not rumoured at the trade deadline that Florida was trying to move Weiss and that the only team he would waive his no trade claus for was the Leafs? That's the kind of player we need. Just watch Burke this summer!

On the surface I would say NO, but if you take a minute and inquire.
OK, first things first. Iginla will be 34 before train camps open in late summer. He is a $7.mil hit per, but for only two more seasons.
I would listen IF this was a salary dump type of thing, in that the Flames would take anything just to get him off of their cap(In other words no first round picks, no top prospects).
And/or put conditions on the trade.
The Leafs must make the playoffs and he, Iginla, must score 35 goals(his avg since the lockout).

Of course this is all for not if he does not want to leave Calgary or will only take a deal to a solid Cup contender.

Yeah, I do not want those over 30 guys anymore.

I don't know how you could call the Iginla trade a fleecing. If anything Calgary got fleeced. Joe Nieuwendyk who was traded to Dallas for Iginla went on to help the Stars win the Cup a couple years after the trade. If a trade helps you win the Cup, That's the whole idea of making a trade. To get better and win the championship. So I don't see how you could consider that a fleecing. What has Iginla won for Calgary

He has won something for Calgary that no Leaf player has lead a team in 40 + years ...
What does Dallas winning the Cup after acquiring Joe Nieuwendyk for Iginla have to do with the Leafs. Read the post and read my comment. If your going use my quote at least stay on topic. let me help you out , Someone suggested that Dallas was fleeced on the trade with Dallas...........The trade helped Dallas win the Cup and Iginla hasn't brought a cup to Calgary, so how was Dallas fleeced and you respond with........... the Leafs.... Where the fuck did that come from and what does that have to do with anything...........................

Perhaps you should try and keep up before you go and make yourself look foolish again. I have quoted the RELEVANT conversation below to allow you to follow along....

Scenicdrive suggested that if the Leafs acquired Iginla for any substantial return, that we would be back here next year discussing how the Leafs got fleeced by Calgary for picking up Iginla, as we were some months ago discussing whether or not the Kessel acquisition was the greatest fleecing in NHL history.

Clear now?

I think with Calgary's "depth" on the blue line its far more likely you'll see Robyn Regehr traded before Iginla. RR is around a $4.5m cap hit I think, so moving him would solve some problems on that front. He's also younger, and a pretty defensively responsible defenseman, and as such should fetch a much higher return for Calgary than Iggy who's both more expensive and older would. Calgary doesn't have any stellar defensive prospects in the system, but in terms of blue chippers they are a lot better off than they are up front with only really Mikael Backlund to speak of.

In any event, Toronto is a very unlikely destination for either guy.

Most likely you'll see them bury salary or enact a buy out in hopes of retaining Curtis Glencross this summer. Otherwise i don't expect them to do anything too drastic as I do believe Hagman, Kotalik, and Sarich all come off the books in a year and that's about $9+ million worth of room.

Trading Iginla would very much make guys like Jokinen and Stajan that much more useless to say nothing of probably turning the fans against the team that would otherwise have nothing else really to offer them (unless they are able acquire a pick in the Coutierier, Nugent-Hopkins range)

Oh, in regards to a few posts back and in speaking of Regehr... It was Regehr and Phaneuf that had the problems in the dressing room as opposed to Iggy and Dion. Phaneuf has always spoken highly of Iginla and even said that when he became captain of the Leafs the first call he got was from Iginla.
