If you had to dispatch a family pet, how would you do it?

This is one of these times when I wonder about some of my fellow terbites. Forcrissakes, an old pet has been a loyal companion to someone for maybe 15 years, and some of you are loath to pay $50 to end its life humanely. I spend that on food and whatever for my cat every two months.

Just sit him down in the family room fire up the PC and make him listen to you read Cute-bald's posts and HOF's reviews. Not very humane, but cheap and effective.

Or, alternatively, read the political forums posts on Israel.

Its curious how so many people on this thread think death by drugs in the vet's office is more humane than a farm killing (shotgun). The gun is far and away the more humane death, but it has a certain connotation to it, for people who did not grow up with guns or animals (not Glocks - hunting rifles and shotguns). Giving the dog to a vet is colder than doing it yourself. If you love your dog, you would be there to look him in the eye as he dies. He will be just as dead at the vet's, but will die by a stranger's hand, scared. This a similar phenomenon to people who think hunting is cruel, but who buy their steaks and chickens at the grocery store. They just don't get it.

Ummmmmm, I missed the part in the original post where he said he lived on a farm and had access to a shotgun. Maybe I'm a little dense but I assumed that if the OP was a farm boy and lived out on a farm and had a shotgun handy, he'd probably do just that. Never mind that it would take a pretty cool hand and cold heart to blow your dogs head off at point blank range with a shotgun. I presume you Mr. CapitalGuy have never even actually held a shotgun in your hand, nor had a family pet. You;re likely just spouting off on the internet without a clue. "Looking your dog in the eye" while you blow his head off with a shotgun?!?!?! .
You're right about access to a gun and some woodlands or a farm. Convenience and hygiene (not to mention legalities) in the city means taking the dog to a vet, although we will keep disagreeing on how humane it is. To me, a chemical death in the animal hospital sounds awful. Easier, because someone else does it, and it is the culturally accepted method in an urban country. But a shotgun blast to the back of the neck is quicker and more certain of success, as distressful as it may seem to some (most) Canadians. But as I said, those are largely the same Canadians who don't think about how their hamburger died.

But you're wrong about the rest. Sorry that you've taken a dislike to me, but oh well. I am a hunter (partridge only) for the past 30 years, and was in the Army for 20 years, so am quite comfortable around firearms, not that it matters if you believe me. (Gosh, please believe me. I would hate for the guys on TERB to think I've never held a shotgun. How can I be cool in their eyes without looking like I know about shotguns and dogs??) I have had 3 dogs in my life. Two as a kid - dad took care of the death part, by taking him to the vet I seem to recall, and #3 is still alive. I choose to keep my head in the sand and pretend he will never die, so I don't have to deal with the reality of his life coming to an end in about 5 years. Anyhow...........

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Call Animal Control, I did it in Mississauga about 4-5 years ago and it only cost $30 plus GST for my cat. Then they sent me all kinds of pamphlets and websites in how to deal with my loss.

Do the right thing homer. Go to the vet and pay the $50. I think the City of Toronto has a service for free or very low cost euthanasia

http://www.toronto.ca/animal_services/pets_and_people.htm

No sense risking an inhumane death for the sake of a case of beer.

The 3 hour death by lawnmower guy should have resisted posting. He's not stupid so I am only left to think he is without concsience. Nottiboi will forever be remembered in the same sicko light as that weirdo who posted the fantasy of fucking the traffic accident corpse.
Your horror is purely out of sheer ignorence. It would be a painless death since the dog was already sleeping..... and carbon monoxide is a very painless way to die. In fact, if I decided to off myself due to some horrible disease or disability, I would consider it for myself.

I'm a hunter and also grew up on a farm. I just shot a bear last week in fact. There is no way I would ever "dispatch" of a pet with one of my firearms. Just my two cents.

As for "looking your dog in the eye" while shooting him in the "back of the head". Aside from the physics of your fantasy scenario, can we agree that it is more civillized to give your pet an "Atravet" tablet (doggie valium) to relax and sedate him and have a vet come over to do the two stage euthanasia routine? I can assure you that from experience, this poses absolutely no anxiety to your beloved pet.

And leaves no lasting barbaric nightmares any normal person would have after blowing their dogs head off with a shotgun...
Since your arrogance seemingly knows no bounds, let's not agree on anything other than to put each other on ignore. Ta.

LOL! YOU are talking about ignorance?

Since you dropped the Death by Dry Ice idiocy... let's deconstruct your Death by Lawnmower scheme.

First off, where do you think you;re going to get "some sleeping pills" for your pet?

From the vet? What are you going to tell the vet why you need them? Do you think he'll prescribe and dispense an anti-anxiety med like Atravet to help you with your lawnmower fantasy? And is the Vet visit free? Free meds too? You do realize that you need to bring the dying animal to the clinic too?

Why not just pay the $50 for the proven and humane procedure instead?

Besides, you're brilliant plan is going to need enough sleeping pills to KILL the animal to allow it to stay asleep for 3 hours of a lawnmower running in a garage!

I think your deranged mind scaled down the typical human/car suicide to doggie scale by going to a lawnmower engine! If you had half a brain that wasn't trying to cheap out and outsmart yourself you'd simply use your quiet car to develop a lethal enough concentration quickly enough and quietly enough to be somewhat humane.
Just go to your doctor and tell him you need some pills for a long flight, get your insurance to pay for them... give doggie 2x the dose. Man you are ignorent AND stupid... the dog will probably be dead within 10-20 minutes... 3hrs is just to be 100% sure. Modern cars are too clean to kill with certainty. Look at your last Etest results and the CO PPM. Dry ice would also work really well, if you don't believe me, take a pound or two off it and sleep in an enclosed space, if you never post here again we will know I was right.

Having 4 incredibly intelligent and loyal dogs(Pembroke Welsh Corgi,Border Collie, Imperial Shitzu, and Shitzu-Daschund Mix"Schweiner Dog") it's pretty disgusting some of the comments being made by some posters.

Our dogs in many ways are like our children.I know it's just the "attention whore" in alot of you for posting such nasty stuff but still....very sad.

How are you so certain that the "proper way" is any less stressful or painful to your pet? Pets all have instincts, so vet trips are very high anxiety. It amazes me that someone would think nothing of paying to have their dogs balls chopped off, then get all high and mighty about a painless euthnasia by carbon monoxide.

How do we know?

Because maybe we've done it?

Point me to any other reference than you and your fellow hackjob killer techniques on TERB on CO poisoning as painless euthanasia by carbon monoxide for pets. Like the one about running a lawnmower in your garage for three hours!!!

Do you even realize what a twisted doofus you appear as by first offering, then defending your homebrew killing advice?
Maybe if you weren't so incapable of doing your own research you would not be such an IGNORANT TWIT. But when I read your post I see you are just defending your source of income by attacking other more cost effective ways. Moral outrage driven by greed lol.

WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Is this thread a joke???? I am shocked and outraged by the inhumane responses I have read thus far. I skipped the 2nd and 3rd page because my stomach was ill from all the sickening responses.

Take the poor Dog to the vet OR have the vet come to your house, where you can hold your dog and pet him in his last moments free from stress. What kind of people are you?? Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

If you have money to pay an sp you can surely afford to end your dogs life with some dignity and respect!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable

As someone that has had dogs for years I ask you to please just call a vet and have them come to your home. Your pet will be saved from the anxiety of having to go to the vets office and it will only cost you a marginal amount more!
Think of the countless times your pet has offered unconditional love and repay them by being kind to them in their final moments.

Can everyone please stop with the insults and ridiculous solutions to this. The days of pulling out your teeth with a string are over, so is taking your pet out behind the barn. Please do the right thing. You'll be thankful afterwards.

Dogs love unconditionally. Loyal animals. And they're capable of feeling emotions, including fear and suffering.

Do the right thing. Call a vet and have them come to your house. Your loving, loyal pet deserves respect and dignity.
