You should really change thread title to not if, but when gas hits $5.00 a litre
Year 2025 when those super high mileage match boxes will be on the roads and only the very well off will be able to drive in a nice roomy powerful car. USA wants 62 mpg cars that year...hasn't been past yet, lets pray it doesn't. If those cars hit the road why would people buy them--cause gas costs so darn much.

People have to stop thinking how much per liter/gallon gas costs and look how much it cost to drive 100 km. If you had a gas hog car--like me--that gets 8 to 12 mpg, it costs alot, it burns up $20 in gas each hour!

If you then drive a car that get 6 times better gas mileage it would only cost $3.33 to drive for an hour...well really it take an hour and 20 mins to drive as far as my car does in an hour but still you be looking at under $5 for the same distance driven.

Recall when SUV's were the rage, gas was pretty cheap back then, jack gas up to $5 a liter and people will still drive--they will be using fancy golf carts on the 401..those 62 mpg cars will have to be so small and light it make these smart cars look large. We might get passenger compartments up were the engine is now and the small engine tuck maybe in the center were a drive shaft or an exhaust pipe is right now. Those cars are going to suck but 60% will only be able to afford to drive them

$5.00 a litre is gonna be a deal one day. Imagine when the world hits 9 billion and modern cities you know of are completely abandoned. When one drop of oil diluted will equal 30 days of work and when there are graveyards of gas powered engines everywhere. Watch this video it will put things into perspective for you.

Your poll needed to split the No- I would keep driving into :

No- I would keep driving that same as today.
No - I would keep driving, but change some driving habits.

The price of gas will be at $5 per litre one day - the other factor is where it also sits as a percentage of your overall income being spent on gas.

There are a couple of charts (outdated and for the US) that show that California with high gas prices only spent 2-5 % of (median) income on gas...in New York it is less than 3 % (the urban influence and subway as discussed here) and in Wyoming and parts of Alabama etc is is up to 15% of their median income - as the income is lower and in a rural area (only choice is by car).

My driving habits would certainly change but I would still keep driving

I dunno; if champagne hit $100 a bottle would you never buy it? When prices rise patterns of consumption change, but the stuff still gets consumed by someone. But I'd bet even at only $60 some most TERB guys haven't seen the need to buy a champagne bucket. Watch for ZipCars and AutoShare to expand.

BTW: Seaview's a good buy at $14, and yes I know there are already choices well above $100.
