Need to go back , there a process to entering into this country .
Our government need to stick to it !!!
....
Yes, the process for refugee claimants is to show up and say 'I'm a refugee'. The government then assess their claims. Wait, that is exactly what happened.

Now if they could throw the captain, crew, and organizers of this ship in jail for smuggling, that would likely serve as a deterrent.

We will do what australia has done. accept a few boats. then there'll be a flood. finally we'll learn and start turning them away. meanwhile, GTA will continue to develop as a hell-hole. the well-to-do will move farther out. the poor will stay. that's the way it goes.
Wow, interesting attitude. I wouldn't be unhappy if people with attitudes like yours left the GTA. It would make it far less of a hell hole.

Unless proven otherwise, these people are innocent of everything except having the money to pay some shady ship's captain. Are some of them terrorists? Could be. Are the Tamils worth of receiving refugee status? For the most part clearly yes.

The issue it seems is not whether these people fit Canada's standards for refugee claimants but instead whether this will lead to too many refugee claimants coming here. From a moral stance, I don't think we could or should turn them away but we should simply make sure that those who we take have not been active members of the LTTE and do our best to ensure that Canadians are not involved in fundraising for them but that is a far different issue than accepting refugees..
The issue is ENTIRLY whether or not the people are refugees by definition. Siomply appearing on shore from a boat is not a definition of a refugee.

The refugee class of immigrant has been overused ever since the SCC decided that as soon as somebody hits Canadian territory and claims refugge they are entitled to basically landed immigrant status while waiting years for their case to adjudicated.

I don't know if this load of people are refugees or not but the decision should be made prior to their landing and costing large amounts of money and resources that we may not have.

The ship should confiscated as is allowed by customs regulations the crew should be jailed for transporting people in dangerous conditions and what ever else the coast guard can come up with.

Wondering why...if this boat was known about for months..it was not intercepted outside the 200 mile limit and redirected to American or Russian or other waters.

Could easily have been done!

thats illegal under canadian law at the moment
could not resist copy and pasting from toronto star .......

And the reason is?

Would someone please explain it to me like I'm a six-year-old. WHY or how come a country such as Australia can turn away this boatload of "migrants" yet Canada somehow seems legally required to take them in? What is different about Canadian TAXPAYERS that make us obliged to pay all these costs, and other countries (Commonwealth at that) can simply say no? When will Canada learn that simple phrase..... JUST SAY NO!!!

Too many damn prior posts to read them all.

Can't they go to Japan (or Iran)? Doesn't Japan (or Iran) have any "international obligations"? Besides 99.9% Japanese Japan can use the diversity.

Seriously, I think that they should go through proper channels and due process rather than rent a ship and just show up univited on our shores. Rock, you will really piss off the LLL's.

One thing I find interesting is that several of these ships have arrived in B.C., yet almost all of the Tamils who have been granted refugee status have promptly moved to Toronto!

I agree with you, about Canadian TAXpayers Paying for them - Why are we NOT asked how to spend OUR money!
The Canadian Laws are too immature (young) for these type of immigrants!
Canada is becoming a SOCIALIST state - looking after everyone - even people who would DIE if not help by government!

OUR polititians are not providing their EXPENSEs for the AUITOR General to review (thats her job! Process Broke?) which may indicate that
OUR own politians are taking advantage of the Canadian system instead of doing the RIGHT thing for OUR country, these days!

I think Our government will break, before "the right thing can be done" - Too expensive to make changes now with current political system!

We need a whole REFORM in Canadian Immigration Laws, Welfare and Medical care.

What are the proper channels for refugees to come in
boatloads to Canada? Are they supposed to rent a plane
instead of a ship? Or should each of them apply for visitors
visa first and come individually as travellers.

As far as I understand the channel through which a refugee
claimant reach here has nothing to do with the claimant's
eligibility to apply for immigration in the refugee category.
The Tamil migrants could have jumped ship let themselves
be rescued or washed onshore. The captain could be charged
of smuggling but the rest could still file for refugee status.

As for concerns of taking on terrorists among the legitimate
refugees I wonder how the hell we are going to identify the
bad guys? I don't think ID documents is absolutely required
of the claimant. At least you can't deport a claimant on the
ground of the absence of paper IDs.

Your place!!
Canada has become a dumping ground for refugees. If no one else will take them, send them to Canada.

I read this morning that they're being processed as refugees, fuckin' lovely.
Meanwhile, a guy in Haiti who is doing everything through proper channels doesn't get a fair shot.

I'm agree and I'm with Landscaper, confiscate the boat, charge those running it and anyone else for smuggling.
...AND send the people back.

Really?
Even Tamil human smugglers, terrorists, and criminals?

It will cost millions to Canadian taxpayers for these 500 to land here.
Cost of CG and naval operations, housing, feeding, legal aid, health care, and finally, welfare. Yes they will all apply for welfare as soon as possible.

It would be cheaper to rent an Air Canada 747, take them off the boat, on a bus, on the plane, and fly them back to where they came from.

Hey I am all for immigrants to come to our country but not like this. Canada cannot open this pandora's box or we'll have the boats arriving on a weekly basis.
Totally agreed... According to the news, there are 2 more vessels on their way to Canada already. This really needs to stop, Canadian citizens are taxed too heavily already, why should these refugees receive Canadian assistance, when our own Canadian citizens are not attended to properly. I think it is best to take care of our own people first, then we look at the refugees...

The proper process would be for the refugees to be processed by the canadian embassy in their home country, and a determination made there. If they are determined to be refugees move them at that point to Canada, there are processes and procedures for this. Showing up on shore and demanding refugee staus circumvents the immigration process most of them are jumping the que because they don`t want to wait.

Another question comes to mind... these folks are refugees in thoery forced from their land and with no way of returning and subject to persecution, where did the ship come from? Who arranged it who paid for it?

No, no, as good Christians and morally superior to anybody else in the unverse we should feed other people's children first and then feed our own children with the leftovers (if any).

No, you should continue to be a selfish individual who is against welfare for the poor and elderly and denying help to anyone else. Of course, all the money saved by that in a year can pay for about a month of the adventure in Afghanistan.
