I have been running Trend Mirco's PC-cillin Anti-Virus.

The updates are automatic and 2 to 4 times per week. Its cost is average but renewals are discounted. Complete satisfaction with it and would reccomend it to friends and family.

I live in St. Catharines, or else I'd be willing to help out in person.

Shaneen, don't take it personally. This wasn't a personal attack against you. Most current viruses are designed to scan the newly infected PC's address book and send a copy of itself to all addresses in it. The odds are 95% that the person(s) who sent you the viruses don't even know that they're infected.

Really, the best suggestion that I could make would be to go out and buy a virus protection program like McAfee or Norton. I use Norton myself and I've got no complaints. It's a few dollars, but imo the cost is more than worth the protection that it gives you...

Good luck...

My computer started to do weird things so I ran a scan and found these
1 Backdoor.IRC Cloner
2 SAME in a different file
3 IRC Tojan
4 Backdoor.IRC.Cloner
5 same as 3 in a diffeerent file
They were not able to be cleaned but they were quarantined. They already did some damage to my files though. This virus is used to hack into and control someones computer. So I have no idea which files etc were messed with.
I wonder why norton did not catch it.
Well Thanks for your help guys.

Shaneen, if the systems probs get intolerably worse, bring the box to my workshop and I'll fix it for you.

I may be an idiot savant, but there are a few things I'm good at and fighting virii is one of them.

wouldnt it be nicer to simply offer to help?

Oh, yes, and next time buy an I-Mac. I know that's just another Mac-head sounding smug, but this kind of thing never happens to Mac folk. Now, if I could sort out those bastards in Nigeria who want to me to deal with mythical posts of cash for a modest percentage, I'd really be a happy camper!

Sounds like you need a regular computer geek to visit once a month to back everything up, sort out the files, and get rid of the crap...I pay mine $75 a month (and a Guinness or two), and it's well worth the investment...They can also increase your own computer literacy factor relatively painlessly.

Good luck - I hope it all gets sorted!

Well, it's NOT that Macs are so much better - it's that there just aren't many of them, so the creators of the viruses don't bother. They want to inflict the greatest amount of damage, and that's in Windows and IE, simple as that. If MACs ruled the world, there would be people saying 'I NEVER have problems w/WinXP".

2 more things

Shaneen:
Here a couple of other suggestions:
Make sure you run Windows Update (in the 'Tools' pulldown in Internet Explorer) on a regular basis (every couple of days).

Secondly, lots of programs that mess up your computer are a result of client scripting (i.e. javascript) from other websites. I turn off javascript (called 'Active Scripting' under 'Security') and then put the sites I trust (Yahoo, Amazon) in my 'Trusted Sites'. So all other sites cannot run any scripts on my computer.

Finally, a great program to eliminate some of these program if they're already on your computer is called Ad-Aware, by Lavasoft. It's a free download from cnet.com.

Is it true

I read a few pages on these particular virii, from what I understand these ones are used by hackers to gain control of someone elses computer. If this is true of these, is there anyway that I can find out who did this?
Thanks
