So I got a new TV, it has component cable input. I have a DVD player about 7years old with component cable output. I've tried 2 different type of component cables on between my TV and DVD, and the picture comes out distorted, as in the color is all purple and stuff like that, with both cables. Obviously I have the colors lines up properly. I first bought the $30 ones from Futureshop, returned them, then I got some Phillips ones from Walmart for $30bucks as well and returned them.

Am I doing something wrong here?

If you are sure you are plugging them in correctly then there is an appliance issue but what you descried sounds like when you mix the cables up. ALSO MACKE SURE YOU HAVE DISCONECTED THE OLDER STYLE VIDEO CONECTION (yellow RCA).The cost or quality of cable would not make such an extreme difference. Red to Red Green to Green Blue with Blue as far as $30 for cables I have seen DVD players with Component out puts for $19 and them though in a set of cables in the box. If any thing it is a cheap test for your TV.

If you have properly color-coded all the cables, and you still have a problem, it may be a setting with your DVD player.

I had the exact same problem with an older DVD player. It had a menu setting for the TV output type - RCA, coax, or component. If you selected the wrong option, you got purple.

Check inside the menu of your DVD player.
I remember on my friends DVD player there's a setting in there somewhere you can change. From RGB to something else (sorry, I don't remember the specifics).. if it's on the wrong setting, everything is a shade of blue.

ECHOOOO! Echooo! echoooo....

So as I was looking at new DVD players... I stumbled across something totally new to me, as I haven't purchased a new DVD player in several years.

Upconverting DVD players... lemme see if I got this... it takes a lower resolution DVD movie (480p) and displays it as a higher resolution?

Sounds (Looks) like a faulty output. You should be able to tell which one by unplugging one of the cables at a time and seeing if there is a difference.

For the cost of a good set of composite cables, you could probably buy a new DVD player. :D
