I Love The CBC ... Now

I see myself watching more CBC now than before they went on strike. The Star Wars trilogy last week, Bowling for Columbine this weekend, and the News is actually useful and interesting.

We don't have to endure a special feature by Ian Hanomansing featuring the impact of fishing quotas on the lives of fishermen in Newfoundland. We also don't need to sit through an in depth report of the difficulties a french speaking family has in rural Alberta.

I'd say lock them out for good and keep doing what you are doing.

I absolutely do not agree. The National is by far the best news show of its kind in Canada or North America for that matter. Even though some of the special reports may not interest you, there are other places in this vast country that require the attention that a public broadcaster can provide. If watching movies is your thing, and it is mine too, that is what video stores are for, and no commercials to boot.
I've gone a year without my ritualistic Saturday night winter pastime, and without Ron & Don on the tube it will seem almost unbearable.
So the next time you walk into a Home Depot, Walmart, or a Golf Town, remember that the CBC is a Canadian Broadcaster making Canadian shows about Canadians by Canadians. And if you don't like it go live in the gun toting US of A. Or better yet, switch stations.

I tend to listen to CBC Radio 2. While I miss not hearing familiar voices, I actually enjoy the format of non-stop music at all hours now. There's just a short break for news which is fair and after that it's pleasurable listening.

On the TV side I only really watch news and any chance to catch BBC World is welcome. So on the whole, the "lack" of CBC hasn't impacted my life in any meaningful way which IMHO is a rather sad reflection on the CBC.

CBC has been running movies ever since hockey was cancelled. It's nothing new and certainly isn't attributable to the lockout.

Personally, I don't watch CBC a lot. But I do sometimes and I recognize it for what it is: Canadian news/content for Canadians. It may not be your cup of tea and, in fact, you might not like 95% of the content. But you don't have to watch. CBC is there for large numbers of Canadians who don't have cable or who live in rural areas. Media coverage in Toronto and other urban centres is widespread, whereas it's not in smaller communities. It's arrgance in the extreme to think just b/c you don't like it, it should be cancelled.

As for funding the CBC, I view it in a "cost of doing business" sense. Having a national Canadian TV channel is, IMO, fundamentally necessary to having a strong, unified country. People bitch and whine that Canadians don't know their history; well CBC is one means of communicating it (those Part of Our History commercials and the award winning History of Canada series both come to mind).

Getting rid of things such as the CBC, railroads, Air Canada, etc., just b/c it's not profitable overall is a huge mistake IMHO. Those things have a fundamental purpose in unifying the country and serving areas that wouldn't otherwise be served just b/c they're not "profitable". I don't believe in running our country as a business; government and the social benefits it provides is not meant to be a profit-making enterprise. That doesn't mean we should ignore waste and graft, but it does mean that things that aren't otherwise "profitable" shouldn't be cancelled just b/c of that reason.

Ever since the CBC locked out their employees, they've broadcast CFL games without any commentary; the only sound is what the spectators hear at the game. Their ratings have actually increased with each game!

I started watching the Winnipeg-Saskatchewan game on CBC with the sound muted and the radio tuned in to the local station that has broadcast rights. The only problem is that the fucking CBC has implemented a five second delay, so I could hear the result before I saw it. How lame is that? I had to turn the radio off.

To hell with the CBC assholes! I hope they never come back!

I agree 100% Svend. If it weren't for Coronation Street I wouldn't have a reason to watch the CBC. Hockey, I have gone over a year without it, and really didn't miss it. Besides there are other stations that show it, or get the NHL package and you can watch any game you want.
I was downtown Toronto the othere weekend, and saw the picketing CBC workers, they better pray that the CBC does let them back to work. Because I would say that a great deal of them would have problems finding other employment. Thank god for unions, you can't get rid of the worst workers, and the best ones are dumbed down to the level of everyone else. Gee I wish I was in a union, NOT.

You obviously don't know much about the qualifications of CBC workers.

Their difficulty would be based on the limited numbers of jobs in their profession that are available, rather than their qualifications.

I am not complaining about Canadian news/content on CBC. But, it frustrates me that the CBC always celebrates the mistreated, the poor, the wrong done by, the challenged in remote areas etc...

How about if the CBC was celebrating that the economic engine of Ontario is carrying the country and other provinces should accept/learn from it. How about celebrating that Alberta is having a revival in oil and an economic mini boom instead of focusing on Ralph Klein's same sex views. How about portraying that the Ontario economy is made up of 25% automotive manufacturing and supply even though there is not one Canadian car company (ie. Canada should be happy about foreign investment instead of complaining about it).

When I am watching the CBC I feel like I (living in GTA) am being blamed for what is wrong with the rest of the country and that our greedy, corporate behaviour in TO is contributing to the demise of the poor areas.

I can just see it when they come back from the strike Sasha whatever his name is will have a feature report on how rural Manitoba was impacted by not having CBC as a life line for the past few weeks.
