I hit a car, is it U-Haul’s insurance or mine?

So I was backing out of a parking spot with an U-Haul truck and bumped the back bumper of a parked car. Yeah yeah I know. Let the jokes fly.

I didn’t know who owned the car so I left a note with a picture of the registration of the truck and U-Haul insurance because I bought it.

My personal car insurance actually covers rentals but it is just easier to buy U-Haul’s insurance in case anything happens to the actual truck. If your insurance, they expect you to pay upfront and get your insurance to pay you back after time. I don’t like that so I buy the insurance from them. There was no damage to the truck though. They didn’t care when I took it back to the U-Haul office.

But looking at things for this - I think it goes as follows:

My fault/U-Haul truck damage goes through U-Haul insurance.

My fault/other vehicle damage goes through my insurance.

Their fault/truck damage goes through their insurance.

Anyone know if this is true? Or how it works?

The guy contacted me back and I met with him to give him my insurance info and my license as well. Just in case.

Also, does anyone know - do we have to go to a reporting Center for this?

I was going so slow there is minor damage but it is also a fibreglass bumper I think because of the way it was kind of crumbly for lack of a better word. So I think he may need a new bumper. I feel bad for the kid. He is probably mid-twenties.

I have been driving this truck, helping someone, for almost a week and half, backing into some of the worst spots, doing it perfectly and on the last trip to actually return the damn thing - bam! Just my luck. LOL.

Anyways, any knowledge from the gang would be helpful. Thanks.

I can't help with the question you are asking.

But I think all U-Haul trucks should have back-up cameras. Most of their clients have little or no experience driving trucks.

I took several U-Haul 22' truck trips from Montreal to Toronto when I made my move. Like you I took out their full insurance just to avoid complications.

I was OK driving forward and turning, but backing up was a bear.

Thankfully no accidents, but there easily could have been...

most of their trucks don't have cameras....I have also rented a Uhaul truck 2 weeks ago...i haven't read the fine print about insurance but I'd assume if you pay for it...it should be covered by theirs...

I agree. There should be back up cameras. Especially since there is a 1ft metal ledge off the back of the truck that you can’t see through the mirrors. I understand it is there to help people into the back but it is a hazard.

Firstly, thank you for being a proper human and admitting to the error. Shit happens, but you didn’t run away.

Insurance always needs a report. At least in my experience.
I never would have thought to leave. Just not my style. I’m to invested in karma beliefs. LOL.
This. Been there done that. This way your own insurance won't go up because it's covered under the U-Haul insurance coverage.

This is good to hear
See the terms on the insurance form you signed with U-Haul. It will have a 'liability' clause. U-Haul probably covers all minor accidents under their commercial insurance.
BTW You are gorgeous, delicious and sexy. Kisses
I will look that up. And thank you for the kind words. 😘

Read the fine print, every insurance coverage is different. Most vehicle rental places are self insured, meaning they do the repairs and there is no separate company paying or doing repairs on the vehicle. There may be a deductible if you are at fault.

Funny I currently work at uhaul pt due to boredom at the moment. Leaving in the winter for 6 months for warmer places.

If you took the insurance it covers everything. What Im not sure of is if it will affect your own driving record and history of insurance because technically you were in an accident.

I'll ask at work for ya.

Be careful to read the fine print. The contract is designed foremost to protect U-haul property. Your negligence might still be a defense with respect to damage done to third parties...

U-Haul's insurance definitely would cover any damages to the truck (except overhead) but not sure about the other person's vehicle. I'd just contact U-Haul for clarification and read the contract.

I believe that if the damage is over $1,000, you need to report. And, today, virtually any accident is more than $1,000 in damages....How was the truck?

Truck was fine. I was going so slow the bumper is more scratched than anything but it is a little crumbly too. It is weird. Which is why I think it is fibreglass. I don’t know much about the body of a car. If it was a metal bumper though, I think there would be no dent, just the paint scratches.

1. Why take their insurance if you’re not going to use it?

2. I'd use the better insurance deal.

3. You should go to collision centre to cover yourself, but if you comfortable with the situation & no one is hurt & it's less than $2000 damage than no...but seriously go.

4. Did Inspector Gadget know that girl and dog were following him? And why was she never in school?

5. The accident will affect your insurance rates in the future with your insurance or U-Haul's insurance.

So I spoke to one of my coworkers. The u haul insurance cover the damage but you are still at fault. Whether or not the damaged car owner insurance company enquires to your identity is the million dollar question. That I do not know. Essentially it comes down to if your info is provided to the insurer. Unfortunately that's as much I could get from them.

ok. Thank you. So good to know Uhaul covers it. If I get dinged for this, so be it. I mean I was at fault. Mistakes happen. I have no problem owning this and accepting any consequences that come with it.
