I am torn reading this thread. So many conflicting thoughts, and experiences come to life inside my head when I think about these issues.
There is part of me which wants to defend those who've experienced it.
There is part of me which aches from having experienced it. I may be Caucasian but I experience it nearly every time someone from another culture crosses paths with me in a store, restaurant, etc. Not to mention the biases within the various factions of Caucasians.
There was a wicked twinkle in my eyes over reading some of the shenanigans of others here.
The number of times I am asked if I have issues with members of another ethnicity via phone, email or text startles me. Rocks me to my core and yet I do understand it is a matter of preference. Some see the packaging another comes in while others view the person regardless of the package.
One thing that bothers me is how many speak out against racism while never hesitating to comment upon another persons physical stature, size, etc.
Some day I hope that society learns tolerance and acceptance. Unfortunately I know I will likely not see it within my lifetime.
For a touch of levity here is the funniest backhanded compliment ever:
"You do very well with those chopsticks!" (A very dear Vietnamese friend after going for Pho and Bun bo for the first time. As we got to know each other better they realized why I laughed.)
