Hurricane katrina

5 years ago today, Katrina hit New Orleans, and we all know the devastation that occured. However, it's 5 years and there is still much to repair. With the BP disaster and hurricane season looming take a moment to hope the good people of the gulf states will not endure another disaster.

1800 dead, thousands injured, lost everything and many still haven't restored their lives. Remember, many promises made to the people of the gulf coast, promises that haven't come through.

If you depend on the Federal Government to do anything you're fucked. What is mind boggling to me is how piss poorly they were prepared for a disaster that they had to know was bound to happen. That was local governments fault. I see they are rebuilding homes that were distroyed. That makes sense. They should just bulldoze everything that was flooded. I believe the French Quarter faired pretty well. You could let that area stand. Knock down the rest and move on.

Lets see:

Does it make a great deal of sense to spend millions of dollars of federal (tax) money to rebuild parts of the city of New Orleans that are below sea level - such as the Ninth Ward?

Levees are controlled by the State of Louisiana and the political corruption associated with the Levee Boards was rampant, however much better to ignore this and blame the Federal Government. However, again Louisiana is not the Netherlands does it make sense to be building on lands below sea level.

The French Quarter and the Garden District made out fine because they are both above sea level (which is why they were the first areas of the city to be settled in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries).

Mississippi is going much better than Southern Louisiana - perhaps because they haven't been running around trying to blame others rather than working together and taking the lead.
