By the time any competitors get their shit together, the iPad and the community developing apps for it could be so entrenched, it will be a very uphill battle to compete with it, regardless of how much memory they have for those who are obsessed with numbers.

IMO I think it is too premature to declare that “Slate [is] DOA.” HP has a very powerful distribution chain and plenty of money to promote this device. Furthermore, now that HP has purchased Palm, they also acquired a treasure trove of patents which could give Slate the edge going forward.
It's DOA. A lot of M&As don't work out and even if they do it can take years before a new product emerges out of the combined companies.

Linux IS OPEN SOURCE which means they are ALWAYS dedicated to constant continual improvement/innovation/modification/evolution....etc. This culture/mind set is hardly anything new. It defines Linux where 'free spirit' thinking is encouraged. Unless you come from a closed locked up culture/mind such as Apple where their changes are tightly restricted/controlled to occurring only every 3 yrs. Mac folks prefer to be led around by the nose, doing as they are told...
Innovation? You mean like when the Linux Foundation openly states that they want more copying of OS X done? LOL!!!

This option is available in most systems even Apple Care which can cost even more, depending on the level of hand- holding sought....
According to you, a seven-year-old can use Linux, why would there be need for support then?

That is a very broad statement. HP is a well-managed company that is very competitive. I believe that HP will be able to compete with Apple with respect to the mobile internet space.

Children around the world use Linux on PCs being distributed in that whatever it was called program to give laptops to children.

If Apple is so great then why does Apple Care even exist?....

HP drops Windows 7 from 'Slate' tablet, will use WebOS variant

Less than a week after computer maker HP agreed to purchase the struggling smartphone maker Palm $1.2 billion in cash, sources are noting that it will be removing Windows 7 from the Slate tablet, instead choosing to use a WebOS variant, arguably the best smartphone operating system available.

Sources say HP was not happy with the overall performance of Windows 7 on their unreleased tablet, saying the OS was too power-hungry. Additionally, a Windows 7 license will bring up the price of any final Slate product, and now that HP owns WebOS, the move makes sense.

TechCrunch says also that HP is set to drop the Intel processor used in the tablet, which would completely kill off any chance of Windows 7 being used.

The truth is that now the HP Slate may be an even bigger threat than before

I totally agree with your comments! The Palm Web OS is world class and now has the potential to revival Apple’s mobile OS.
And credible cometition would be a good thing for all of us (unlike, say, the Zune).

The essence of competition is a business relationship in which two or more parties compete to gain customers.
And when they need to innovate (instead of just copy Apple) to gain advantage we all win.

Well-managed? What about that episode with Fiorina? Anyways, you have your belief and I have mine. :)

I don't think you understand... the Slate IS DOA because HP said it is no longer going to make the device. Steve Balmer promoted it a while ago, and it is now cancelled. Read this

HP's purchase of Palm may allow HP to re-engineer its Slate, but for now, what was promoted as their slate is officially dead.
Right on dude.

If Ubuntu Linux is so great then why does Canonical have paid tech support?
For the same reason Red Hat and a few other distros do.
Not all of the over 100 Linux distros are free....

And that puts paid to your constant questioning of why does Apple have Applecare. Same as the Linux people.
And lets not forget to include M$ which does the same....
