As long as I can strap a Glock on my hip when I'm out and about count me in!

And get rid of ATTs, and allow suppressors and full auto....I'm in.

The biggest problem I see is "why would we do it"? We already have free trade and a fairly painless border. Why would I want to take on their stupid high national debt?

I saw an article in the National Post last week with an exerpt. She used several standards under business to determine how canadians would make out.

I believe the purchase rights amounted to about 492,000 per person to each resident of the nation.

Your first two hospital visits without OHIP should wipe that out. The religious right will immediately revamp morality laws to match the US (alcohol not served in full nude bars. Your $20 VIP charge of the Pro will give way to champagne rooms - the Pro charges will be fondly remembered the same way as 20 cent per litre gasoline is now.)

Merge USA guns, generational poverty and disenfranchisement, severe incarceration of minorities, polarized and paralyzed government, arrogant and medling foreign policy, no social safety net, higher education for the rich only, over aggressive law enforcing...

with

evolving, nurturing, accepting, non-aggressive, pacifist, educated, low incarceration, low law enforcement and military presence, few gun problems, more reasonable government of Canada?

No thanks.

Oh? What about the myriad of trade disputes the US refuses to resolve, considering the agreed-upon resolution mechanisms sided with Canada? Like for instance, softwood lumber...

Why would Canadians want to join up with a dying empire? Why would any sane and rational human being decide the american political system is preferable to Canada's? fox news anyone?

Quite frankly, go suck up to the koch brothers on their side of the border. Your "ideas" are not wanted, needed, or welcome here.

By the way, there's nothing original about writing a book proposing a union between Canada and the United States -- an expatriate Brit, Goldwin Smith did that in the late 19th century.
He was nearly slung out of Canada for his pains...
Canadians have the same right to be proud of their national identity and sovereignty as any other people on this earth

Amen to that, I also am a proud Canadian and would fight for this Country's independence tooth and nail.

As we watch the U.S. government grind to a halt due to an ancient, unsolvable partisan jihad; and we watch its national debt climb to about a quarter of the world's total GDP; and we watch Fox News & Friends point north to an example of a "broken" healthcare system to avoid the spectre of something that almost resembles humane healthcare - THIS is when you want to make your case that Canada and the U.S.A. should merge? Right now?

When journalists talking to other journalists (who pretend to write books) makes news, it's a sad day. This is a non-event, non-question...not even worth discussing.

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade.

Whoa! Didn't say I supported it! I'm a happy little canadian thanks!

Just pointing it out to show we probably are better off than some think.

I wouldn't be surprised if we have something like the European Union; easier border crossings, don't know about the common currency.

Just get rid of the "20 Questions" routine at the border. You can scan my passport and go through my underwear all you want. If I commit some kind of serious crime in either country, I'm sure your cops are more than enough to take me down.

It wasn't personal ! I know you were quoting the magazine which I was responding to. I lived and worked down there for close to 10 years. The people are great but their politicians (both sides) are bought out by the lobbyists and people are moved around like game pieces just to line the richest people's pockets.

The last thing Republicans want is 35 million more Democrats.
LOL, exactly.

That said, if it ever did happen, I'd be moving to either the UK, or Australia.

The US is fine and dandy to visit, but that's about where it ends.

Can the U.S. get the Queen as Sovereign and dump Obama? Also will the U.S. be part of the Commonwealth? Will there be real checks and balances unlike the benighted Westminster system?

Unfortunately a nice pipe dream of the lines of Harry Turtledove and Richard Dreyfuss' novel The Two Georges.
