I have some of those mini-cassettes from a personal voice recorder that I need to transfer to a digital format. How do I go about this?

Can I just plug the cassette player into the input on my sound card? Is there software that comes with Vista to do the transfer? What kind of cable do I need?

Yes you need to buy a cable which has the two male plugs that fit both sockets of your microcassette recorder and sound card (either 2.5mm or 3.5 mm, they may not be the same size).

Windows XP and 7 has built-in sound recorder (never used Vista but I presume it is also there). If you need something fancier (eg. editing, changing recording format etc), you can try this freeware called Audacity:

This is a basic guide for what you want to do:

(program download link in one of the tabs)

Audacity is an excellent free program that allows you to do just about anything you desire with audio files.
