I have Windows XP SP2.

I went to the System Configuration Utility by typing "msconfig" in "Run"

Under "Services", I unclicked "non-essential" programs with help from "theeldergeek.com" in an effort to speed up the computer.

Now when I start the computer, I get the logon screen (prompting me to select a username or Guest). I would re-click what I took out but there were quite a few of them and I don't remember which ones I took out.

***I'd like to get rid of the logon screen without resorting to SystemRestore. Thanks. :)

Go to Control Panel->User Accounts and disable the Guest account (just click on it and follow the instructions)

click start-run, type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes

uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"

at the prompt, enter the ID and password that you want to auto login when starting your computer

Done!
