Amazing that I'll tip a waiter who walks from the kitchen to my table $5-$25 depending on cost of meal. But the delivery guy usually gets $3-$5 for driving several miles depending on the size of the order. That seems bakwards.
It's correct, and it's surprising me that these guys earn tips at all. I tip them because I know their pay sucks anyway, coz I'm a compassionate guy, but it doesn't seem right to me.
On the other hand I am a strong supporter of wait staff in restaurants earning their tips.
Two key differences here:
1. Delivery guys are subject to minimum wage laws and, more importantly,
2. Delivery guys are not part of the sales process
Restaurant staff earn tips because they are very much like commissioned sales people, there to make sure you are happy with the transaction, up sell you as much as possible, and earn a percentage of the sale. The delivery guy has nothing to do with your order--if anything the phone operator should get a percentage.
Consider this: If you have a problem with your food order at a restaurant you take it up with your waiter, and your waiter tries to make you happy (if they're good). If you have a problem with your pizza order, you do not take it up with the delivery guy--you call the phone operator, and THEY try to make you happy. Clearly it's the phone operator who is in the sales and customer management role and is the equivalent of your waiter.
