I like to start at 10%. It goes up or down based on service.

I don't consider the server just bringing my order to be good service. If they don't check in at least once during the meal to see if anyone needs a fresh drink or to check that the food was as ordered, or they make you search for them when everyone is finished and we just want to pay and get out of there...I consider that to be poor service. If all they do is take your order and deliver the food then they are only doing the job their employer is paying them for and I don't feel the need to supplement their income.

Don't get me wrong, being over zealous and asking if anyone needs anything every 5-10 minutes can become tedious but I'd prefer more attention to less. Obviously this is a pre-Covid attitude. I haven't eaten out in a few months and I've tipped at the places I go to pick up food whereas I never would have tipped for takeout 4+ months ago.

I know it's not a popular answer but I'm sick of being shamed into tipping people who probably take home more in a week than I do. My sister-in-law was a server at a busy sports bar and she used to bring home over $200 in cash on a busy night, more on the weekend. As the guy who does her taxes, I can assure you that she didn't claim it...

Some servers expect a big tip just for being young and pretty.
I was at Moxies with some clients in early December. My Server was smoking (my type) hot blond. After my guests left the table I stayed back to pay the bill and catch up on some work. My server gave me the bill and I added 25% tip using me company credit card. That tip turned into an intense night of sex within a month! We still hook up today!

Do people tip the same at a buffet, where you go get the food ? The waiters just fill in the water glasses and take away your dirty plates.

It is entirely up to you. Most either do not tip at buffets or greatly reduce the tip at a buffet.

Are you thanking your company credit card for that one?

That won't work with me! Unless they bend over a lot with a low cut blouse ........ :ROFLMAO:
You'll need to avoid looking her in the eyes as you leave the establishment as she'll be hurt thinking she's not young and pretty enough.

Always tip unless the server is a total ass, which I think I've come across once in my adult life. Tips are split with the kitchen staff also. I spend many many years working in the restaurant biz and I know how important it is, especially to those cute coeds working their way through school (y). Oh man, I miss eating out :(

1 cent up to 50%,

Twice I left 1 cent with my phone number so the managers know I got shit service. Only one called me and I still go to their restaurant, the other went out of business soon after.

If you tip shit service you are actually hurting the restaurant and the other good servers. You have actually rewarded shit services which will continue and eventually scared the customers away.

You leave one cent because if you don't it will just seem like you are cheap. 1 cent means you are fucking pist and feel ripped off.

I only tip 50% once, but fuck ex-wife and I were made to feel like we were royalty. Bill was 250 and we left 125, but never seen service like that.

Now is the time to rethink this whole tipping culture and move in another direction. Servers need to get a living wage. They will never be able to live on tips when restaurants are at 50% or less capacity. Also people can’t afford more as they may have had salary reductions (I did) or even living on CERB.
Servers do not want to have their salary set at the "living wage (e.g., at $18/hour) and have no tips (or a $5 tip per table for an excellent service), because this way they will earn much less than collecting 18% of the total bill as tips. An average of 3 person per table with each table taking 2 hours to eat, 3 tables per server at a time, and an average bill of $40 per person with 18% tip is equal to 3*3*40/2*0.18=$32/hour. A more busy work (4-5 tables at once or larger tables, or faster turnaround) or a more upscale restaurant can easily run tips into $50-$80 per hour territory.

My tipping strategy: $5 per hour I sit at the table +$2 per each additional person per hour at the table, but not less than 12% and not more than 25% of the total bill. The above scenario (3 people with $40 per person sitting for 2 hours) results in exactly 15% (which results in tipping earning of $27/hour for the server minus whomever he needs to share the tips with). Lower percentage tip if I eat fast, the group is larger or the prices are high. Higher percentage tip in lower-prices restaurants.
