As with all things, there is a time and place and proper way to do things.
Showing up so high or drunk that your little buddy is not working, is probably not the best choice and a big waste of money. Having a glass wine over a dinner date is totally appropriate.
I think the type of client/companion relationship that the two people have will play a part as well. If the two of you are weed smokers that seems like a match, but as a companion, I would want to stay sober for the first couple of sessions until I know for sure I can trust him and I would assume the same could be said for the client. There should be a certain level of trust for both sides before taking the risks of getting high or drunk. Certainly not something I would do for a first time encounter. I wouldn't do anything if I was driving either, and would be concerned about the client leaving if they are driving.
