Should be a bunch this year with the new no touch me in front of the net rule. I say 5 and that may be conservative

i went with 7 because i think the average goals per game will be boosted 20% after averaging over a whole year. i did some statistical work and came up with some odds of who would do the most scoring. after a bunch of screwing around with my calculator i think that it is reasonable to say that anyone that scored 37 goals or better since 1999 would've had a 85% chance of scoring 50 goals if the rules were geared the way they are now. The average number of players per season between 99 and 04 that scored 37 or more goals was 9. i then took off the 15% that probably wouldn't get the 50 goals and then rounded conservatively from 7.65 to 7... besides .65 of a hockey player is probably one with no legs... so i dunno... i have too much time on my hands and i guess i'm just excited to see what happens.

ok.. then... average goals have gone up 41% , not 20% as i had predicted... but, then again, this average could change alot come spring....

i think now it looks like there are 16 or so that could reach 50 if they remain hot... now, that never happens, but, it still looks possible that 8-10 could reach the milestone.

I would say over 10

Here are some of the probable people that will reach 50 goals

Jagr
Ovechkin
Lindros
Gagne
Naslund
Satan
Datysuk
Zetterberg
Lecavalier

i think he is... Domi's on pace to score 14 goals max.

who do you think will score the 50 goals this season?

my pics... (i said there'd be 7)
1. Daniel Alfredson - 1st swedish born NHL Captain to win a Stanley Cup!
2. Jaromir Jagr
3. Simon Gagne
4. Dany Heatley
5. Alexandre Ovechkin
6. originally thought Rod Brind'Amour would be one, not sure though
7. Daniel Briere

but right now, it's hard to tell... there could be 25 on course to hit 50 plus goals...

it was last in '93 when 14 players all scored 50 or plus goals each.

did anyone change their idea of how many 50 goal scorers there will be?

I was thinking about this thread today and decided that I'd vote a low 4...

Seems there are many goals to be had but the many early season PP's are starting to decrease as players adjust.

Goals WILL be up but I think they are being spread out among several lines/players. Lotsa career years this year!

In my opinion there is very little relation to the number of 50 goal scorers and the overall quality of play. As others have alluded to, if the only reason goals are up (and as a, result 50 goal guys) is due to teams controlling the puck during power plays (and especially 5 on 3's) it doesn't increase the entertainment value as much as good old fashioned up and down the ice play with creative passing and playmaking.

As such, I don't care too much what the actual number of 50 goal scorers is. I just want entertaining competitive games where the players are able to demonstrate their skills (offensive and defensive). A ton of goals on power plays doesn't do it for me. Don't let me spoil your fun, though.

what about the last 8 seasons of clutching and grabbing and keeping all the play up and down along the boards at a relatively slow pace because of the trap... did you like that better?

Obviously not. What I what I said was I like up and down creative hockey that creates lots of scoring chances and goals. I felt a bunch of 50 goal scorers created by a gazillion power plays is artificial.

Goals off power plays may be better than clutching and grabbing, but it is not the same as freewheeling firewagon brand hockey.

agreed.

but they also called alot more penalties in the '80s and early '90s... not more than now, but almost the same as this new season when compared to '93 to '03.

once you see that daniel alfredsson is on pace for 82 goals, then you know that scoring is up way too much! the nhl needs more hitting and fighting, and less crosby hype

scoring is only up 1 more goal per game...

and alot of names haven't registered any goals yet... Federov, Stumpel, Lombardi, Bonk, Malholtra, Dupuis, etc.. players selected for their offensive skills, too!
