How long does a snow blower / lawn mower last?

I would think if you kept it in good condition and changed the oil and lubricated the machine as recommended, it should last 20 - 25 years. I was wondering if anyone has experience with a snow blower / lawn mover long term. After a snow storm, there are a lot of "Friend in need" types that sidle up to me when I am using my snow blower. These are the same people that barely talk to me usually, one guy moved in next door did not even acknowledge my existence until I got the snow blower. I tell people ( lie ) that snow blowers do not have car engines and the small engine will only last 10 years if you use it 15 - 20 hours a year. I tell them that some nebulous small engine repair guy told me this.

Never volunteer to clean snow for people, or you will open up a door that can never be closed. If they bug you in a snow storm, do it once but tell them that other people are bugging you and you do not want to do it for the whole street. I do clean the snow for an old widowed lady next door, and a guy that has a heart condition, but that's my limit.

Oh come on man. We barely get any snow in the city.

A couple of storms ain't gonna hurt you.

Do the neighborly thing.

Besides, it gets me outta the house with my toy!

Whatever works, you do not need the friend in need is a friend in deed types. If he buzzes off for good, all the better. I say for the moochers and sidlers, get your own machine. They are dammed cheap these days and for the price you pay, it will more than pay you back in saved labor.

My first 5 HP MTD snow blower lasted 25 yrs. Did all the required PM and it ran like a charm. It was built like a tank. Made in the USA. Even in the 25th yr it started up on the first pull. Got rid of it because the main auger bearing was going causing it to chew up auger belts. Figured it was better to get a new one than fix that and wonder what will go next. Got a new bigger, 8 HP one, that FWIW is not made as well (made in China) and has only been used 3 times (for a total of 40 minutes so far) this winter due to our extremely mild Buffalo winter....probably due to Global Warming. In hindsight, may have been better off fixing the old 5 HP one instead of getting the new one....:eyebrows:

Good small equipment lasts a long time. Just like with the hobby doing some homework goes a long way toward getting the best. Most small engine people prefer Honda engines but they make cheap "throw away" motors now also. When you're done for the season remember to drain the gas out or put in some fuel stabilizer to prevent a gummy carburetor next year. Ethanol in the gas now causes problems with small engines, particularly 2 cycle engines that take a gas oil mix. There are new oil formulas to prevent ethanol problems. 25 years is not an unreasonable expectation for quality small equipment, but the cheaper stuff might not last much past the warranty. When someone asks me for help that I don't want to give I say "I'll be over later. If I'm not there in a while start without me."

All new blowers and mowers have small engines built in China. No longer do we manufacture small engines here. I have been told by some that these engines are built to throw away. So I don't think that they''ll have the same life expectancy as the N.A. built ones. Normal maintenance should keep it going, getting your moneys worth out of it.

hmmm that would be wierd of anyone to come knocking on my door to snowblow for them when we never talk or acknowledge each other. You probably seem too gullible.

I don't know what kinda neighbours you live with, but I sure as hell wouldn't be like them in going up to my neighbour and asking him to clean my driveway when we never talk.

Just do your thing, if they ask once, sure you could help them once... But the next time you clean your driveway, don't do theirs. That would give them a clue that you don't give a fuck about cleaning their driveway. If you really don't care about them, don't even bother doing it even after they ask.

Since I started the angry lash out resume, the bully has toned things down to 3 or 4 flame war provocations instead of the one every post I make. The more often that he attempts to provoke a flame war, the bigger his angry lash out resume grows. I see the big unhappy bully has gone to annoy other people by commenting on their every post. I suggest they do as I do, make your own thread hijack or flame war resume to expose the bully amongst us.

Good God! He almost went a full two months without a flame war provocation on me!

You would be surprised how friendly people get with strangers after a snow storm, especially when you have a snow blower. Like I said, I do the walk and driveway for an old lady next door and a guy a few doors down that had a heart attack. The guy next door on my other side that did not acknowledge my existence till I got the snow blower is a special case, he has a sense of entitlement because he believes that he is better than other people because of his job. Yet, the bastard does not go out and get himself a snow blower. Maybe because if he does, he knows people will bother him to clean their driveways.

My dad still has (and uses) the lawnmower he and mom got as a wedding present. I'm 43 and I wasn't born a bastard (took years of training :) )

I have a snowblower that I bought used in the early 90's. Originally from the late 70's or early 80's. I did a basic carb cleaning one spring about 15 years ago, other than that drain the gas in the spring, change the oil once in a while, grease some points periodically. Built like a tank.

Take care of your small engines, they will last forever. The body of the blower or lawnmower will go first.

Tecumseh doesn't make engines anymore, I believe. Briggs and Stratton still manufactures engines in the US.
