How long before Spezza gets traded by Ottawa?

I'm not comparing them as of today. I'm comparing the when they were 24.

Spezza's kind of a Joe Thornton clone.

except Spezza doesn't quite have what it takes to lead a team on his own. he's only 3 years younger than Thornton and I haven't seen anything Thorntonlike out of him, yet.

you can pull stats of Spezza on a peak season and compare them to an average Thornton's season on a much lower scoring team, but you can actually really compile more fair stats and see that they may 'seem' comparable. However, put the two on lines with weak wingers and you'll quickly notice who's better and that there is an eliteness to the varying degree of talent between the two.

or another way of looking at it... is Spezza the best player on Ottawa? No. Thornton is arguably one of the best 2 players in the NHL right now.

let's not forget that this is nothing new for Spezza. He was bounced around the OHL because of his poor attitude and lack of maturity. there are times when a clown in the dressing room is good for keeping everyone loose, but, i think he lacks the gene to 'take things seriously'.

I know nothing about Spezza's ability to lead, but I do think he's a Thornton clone in the way / style he plays - all I was saying was, if SJ is looking to fill a hole - another playmaking centre is not going to fill it. No puns were intended despite this being on TERB.

i totally see your point. but, i think another great centre is what the sharks need. Spezza, i don't think is the guy- especially when they have the $$$ and cap room to get a player like Gomez, Briere, Drury etc..... big Joe doesn't need any wingers... he can make the worst of them stars..lol.. but, he logs heavy minutes and there needs to be a top elite #2 centre to fill when Joe gets gassed.

ie, look at the strength down the middle of Ottawa, Anaheim, Buffalo (until July 1st), and soon coming in Pittsburgh.

Pretty easy teams? Pittsburgh and Buffalo? I'm pretty sure if you took a poll of coaches, GM's & writters BEFORE the playoffs, that they would rank the Sabers & Pen's among the the 3 or 4 most explosive offenses in the NHL. Also beat NJ with Elias-Gionta-Gomes, probably one of the 5 best lines not playing in Pittsburgh or Buffalo. I think it's too easy to devalue that record after the fact.

I think the beigger question is wether they can with Redden - and not just in the Finals - from the second round on, it was like watching McCabe at his worst (minus the penalties).

Against the Ducks, it really seemed that the only player who could have made some difference would have been Chara.
