I am smoking along at 40 kbp/s. Gotta love living in the boonies where you can only get dial-up. Anyone tried satellite internet?
I had satelite for several years. It was $2K to buy and $180 per month, but I think that the prices have now gone down. The upload and download speed was ok, so surfing was fine, the big problem was latency. I wanted to use terminal server to connect to my office, but each keystroke had to go up to geosyncronis (?) orbit, down to the earth again, then the key appearing on the screen had to go up and down, so there was a delay of about a second. For an interactive application like moving around in a document or spreadsheet, or editing, it was unusable. Now I have a land-based local directional wireless, it is a little faster, but the latency is gone, so I can use terminal server. And it is much cheaper.
