staedtler non-permanent lumocolor, from grand and toy. But I've been thinking recently, these aren't rewritable disks so wtf. It is a fine point marker. Good luck with whatever you choose
Probably a similar formulation to the Sharpies. Office Depot sold Leroy-like circular templates from Staedtler along with two permanent Lumocolor pens.

UPDATE:

On further investigation, there is a difference in solvents between CD/DVD labelling Sharpies and regular Sharpies. So, to play it safe, and even though it may seem not to matter, use the markers specifically made for the labelling, unless you don't care too much about the data that are recorded on the disc.

.....It would be far more dangerous to stick DVDs in a CD jewel case or to store a spindle on its side.
Curious about this?
Care to expand on it?

Any stress can deform a disc and make it unusable. It may sound silly about storing DVDs on a horizontal spindle (with each disc supporting its own weight), but those things weigh more than you'd think and over months and years it could cause problems. Not all jewel case clamps designed for CDs could harm a DVD, but I recall reading about it happening. I think the hub sizes are slightly different.

What I was trying to get at was that the real disc killer is improper storage and handling. Simple neglect may claim more discs in a day than sharpie ink ever will.

For the record, all of my DVDs have decent coating on the label side and I probably won't use them much whenever I upgrade to a higher density format.

I picked up some pens today.

Sharpie makes CD Writer pens. The pack I got has four colours and each pen has a fine and ultra fine tip (double ended). The item # is 32142. Costs around $10.
