any thoughts about loblaws? they carry prepaid for bell, rogers, virigin and PC. was thinking of picking one up there/Three nice things about 7-11.
- no name or address required when getting a number.
- a $25 voucher lasts a year and rolls over into the next year so long as you add more minutes prior to the end of the year.
- a quick code typed in gives you your balance.
No 7-11s in Ottawa by the looks of it. Will look into Petro-Canada.
Seems like for most of these plans/providers, the balance will eventually expire if not used?
I don't know what the sign up rules are for them. The 7-11 terms were perfect for me so I stopped there.any thoughts about loblaws? they carry prepaid for bell, rogers, virigin and PC. was thinking of picking one up there/

Yeah, I heard that. Is there a special thread on this issue?Apparently, the SCC has just released its judgment on LE's rights to search your phone.
And unless you committed a murder the police aren't going to do the huge amount of legwork to trace your IMEI to a manufacturer to a wholesaler to a 7eleven corporate order to delivery to a particular store then find the cash register receipt and then pore over the video just to find out that it is probably a low quality image without a clear picture of your face.
Seriously, stop watching CSI. Yes the police can quickly get your phone records because that is a simple search of the mobile company computers, and even that requires a warrant. If that leads to the police needing to go all CSI to track you down they aren't going to bother unless they think you are the mastermind of a terrorist network.
The $25 'voucher' is the amount in dollars you are topping up your balance. With 7-11 your balance will last a year before you have to top up if you don't use it. Their per minute talk/ text rate are on their site. I think it's ¢10 per text and ¢25 per minute talking. You can top up in $25,$50,$100 amounts depending on your usage. You just ask to buy a Speakout top up for $xx amount and you will get a receipt with a code on it. Just punch in the code on your phone to top up your balance. What's the $25 voucher for?
Edit: Okay. How much time is that?

They have a promo on now with a couple of their phones selling for $30 if you buy $50 in speakout ' minutes'. I believe a sim card is provided if you purchase the phone. You can buy a sim as well and use an old rogers or unlocked phone.
Their best deal now is buying $100 speakout minutes and receiving an additional $25 free. If you combine that with the $30 phone deal you're essentially get the phone for $5. To activate an account you can call from another phone or online and only need to create a pin. No other personal info required.
If the old phone was used on rogers network or unlocked then it should work with speakout SIM. Depends on you if you want a wifi or smartphone.Say I use my mom's old, discontinued flip phone. Will they provide me with a Speakout SIM? What's the cost of a phone from them? I see that the Petro Canada phones are basic smartphones that include WIFI, but does one really need all that?
BTW, thanks for the info!
At the end of the day, a burner phone only makes sense if you need to hide it from your S.O. or perhaps, to comply with corporate policy, because what are the chances that LE is tapping into your cellular communications?
