How do scalpers get tickets?

Within minutes of going on sale, The Tragically Hip concerts were sold out. And in less time, the tickets re-appeared on stub hub etc.

I'm wondering how these big ticket scalpers (not stub hub which is just an eBay of a middleman) get their hands on so many tickets?

Do they have automatic e-bots that have scripts that buy up tickets? Do they have an army of people at home on their computers?

Curious...

Amex front of the line. Multiple laptops with programs to cycle to get tickets. Season ticket holder advance sale. Bribery. And in some cases even the venue management are in on it and don't release some seats.

Also just the ease of the Net makes it tough to get tickets. Remember when you used to line up? And that was it?

Supply and demand at work. As long as there are people will to pay the ridiculous mark-ups on StubHub and other ticket "re-sellers", those vendors will survive and thrive. It's only when consumers finally say "enough is enough" and refuse to purchase tickets through these vendors that things will change. I wish the artists would get involved. Maybe if everyone tweets the Tragically Hip about how they can't get tickets because they're all on StubHub, maybe the band would do something about it.

Maybe we need to restrict ticket sales to in person purchases, 2 tickets maximum, made with credit card and photo ID, which are also checked at the door. That, or do away with advanced ticket sales altogether. You wanna go to the concert? Show up early and hope you get a ticket. There's gotta be a better way, 'cos this ain't working.

I was reading that a block of tickets were advance sold to members of the fan club. I'm not sure if this is a common practice but it at least means several die hards got tickets.

Chapelle, Adele, Garth Brooks and other artists force the attendees to use their credit cards on entry or do will call/mobile only entry. This basic all ends any chance of resale unless you get paper tickets at the box office. They could have gone this route, but maybe Canadian venues are not as advanced.

Also, blame the companies who resale. Often to sell a ticket for face value, the site charges a +20% premium to the seller, then adds on an additional +20%. So if you want to resell your tickets for a fan friendly price of face value ticket of let's say $100, the end buyer will pay $150. And StubHub deserves criticism for this inflation of prices.

I would love to know the program they use because even when I pay extra money for the ability to buy tickets a day before the general population I still get average seats. And I try my best to be online at exactly the time the tickets go on sale.

The rules are totally hidden. It may be that the ticket companies scalp there own tickets and it is not possible at all to buy most of the tickets - it only appears to be possible. It is unlikely that the scalpers or their programmers did not work for the sellers at some point to gather intel - much easer to hack in that case.

Yeah but sites like stub hub only get a portion of the sale and I don't think the percentage is high enough to make it more valuable than selling direct.

Anyways it certainly is possible especially if the so called resellers have a deal which the average person looking to sell tickets on stub hub is not privy to.

As long as Ticketmaster has a monopoly on the ticket biz it will always be corrupt.

It was a Fanclub Presale and they are the one's complaining they couldn't get tickets. They were given a code " MACHINE " but there were no tickets left.

Iron Maiden did the Credit Card only for their show @ the ACC this year

Couldn't care less.
I never liked The Tragically Shit.
Thank you for adding your thoughts to the thread and taking the time to let everyone know now you feel.
I am sure that the next time you might have something to add to the discussion.
Keep up the good work.

The Fan Club and AMEX Pre Sale sold out

You still have an opportunity Friday when tickets go on sale to the general public or Thursday June 2 when the LIVE NATION / FACEBOOK PRESALE goes on ( you need a code )

If people want it that bad, then pay up.

No different than people doing bidding wars on houses or Black Friday deals.

You got to be quick to be first online. If you're not, then too bad. It's either sold out, or if you want to go that badly, you got to buy it off someone.

I don't get why it's that hard to get tickets. Any event I've tried buying online I've got access to tickets. All you have to do is log onto the ticket site when it's open (for example, Leafs tickets go on sale on one of the Sept Saturdays at 10 am). I've been to various concerts, and as long as you sit there refreshing the screen at the opening bell, you should be able to get something. Granted, it might not be the exact seat section you want, but can't be picky.

I bet most of the people complaining about any kind of scalped ticket are ones who try to buy tickets the next day assuming there's still tons of seats left. Ok, maybe a Jays game with 81 home games and 50,000 stadium will have tons of seats, but for hot one-off concerts in a 20,000 arena, you snooze you lose.

The scalping business will disappear if people don't buy off them. For the times I checked a concert or sporting event later on (I forgot, or found out about it late) and it was sold out, who cares. Skip it. I've never had the urge to force myself to buy an inflated ticket price. Who cares. If people want to pay 2x or 3x face value off stubhub or a shady guy on a sidewalk, it's your money go for it. But don't complain that it's unfair scalpers jack up the price.... because anyone buying off a scalper is keeping the engine going.
