Somehow I changed the word documents in my Word software. The word documents now have .doc after them in the screen that pops up and lists the documents. Should I keep the .doc extension or should I remove them? How do I remove the .doc extension?

Don't remove the extension, Word uses it to identify the file. There may be an option in your version of Word that will hide the extension of known files.

It is Windows displaying the .doc extension but it has always been there. Why do you want it removed ? Windows uses the .doc extension to call up the Word application instead of another app eg. video player, Excel, photoshop, etc. If you remove the .doc from the file and double click on it, Windows will ask you which program you want to use to open the file - every time you use it.

If you don't want to look at the .doc, there is an option in Windows which hide the extensions of known file types.

It's better to just ignore the extension than to not see it. That way you don't end up clicking on something without knowing what it is. Many people end up with viruses and malware clicking on something they THOUGHT was a document or picture. If you see it's .doc rather than .bat, .exe or .com then you're less likely to cause yourself problems with that particular scenario.

I agree it is an extra level of safety. Additionally, the icons will be changed by Windows to match the default application logo. Word docs will have the Word 'W' on the icon. Undefined data files are blank and will send up a message window.
