Essentially R&B was referred to as black music back in the 50's combining elements of jazz, blues and gospel. In the 60's it evolved into soul music and in the 70's more of a funk and disco element. From the 80's onwards its been referred to as soul/R&B and contemporary R&B. Not too many successful caucasian contemporary R&B artists but there are a few - Robin Thicke, Jon B, Teena Marie. Christina would be considered a bit more of a pop/R&B crossover, kind of like Mariah Carey.
