Had my hotmail account stolen last night. I feel it might be from a posting (of my address ) on Canbest. Grrr. Anyone had this happen? Apparently cookie theft..wait a minute..that doesn't make sense. Anyway..it's gone with all my friends email addresses.

Because they only offer 2MB storage - they are also very popular with spammers and hackers who consider Microsoft a challenge.

There are many sites out there who will offer 5MB - 10 MB free storage without the headaches associated with hotmail.

Just do a search on Google you'll find several sites there devoted purely to hacking hotmail.

Put it this way

I use Hotmail myself - but don't give it out openly - only a few people - its just my private email box for discretion ;) Anyway after seeing these hacking related threads (and being a computer geek thought I would do some checking) If you want to know how much a target MS Hotmail is (because its microsoft related) just goto http://www.google.com and type "Hotmail Hacking" into the search box. Hotmail is one of the most common free email systems (also "one" of the first) and these hackers (really they are not true hackers cause they are using other peoples openly documented knowledge to do this - don't have the brains to do it on their own) Since it is very popular people will target it first - especially being affiliated with the MS name they get the most "popularity & exposure/fame" for finding a way to hack.

Just my 2 cents

Yahoo came out with free mail right around the same time I think hotmail beat them - there was also one other short lived company that had tried it can't remember the name now they only lasted around 6 months - I don't know who was the first - so I put down "one" of the first so some trivia buff couldn't go - Wrong actually ..................... insert lengthly boring text here ......

Just pointing out the info is out there - I don't have the time or desire to find a working hacking site to bother attempting hacking into yours - I have no interest in hacking but there are alot of people with way to much free time on there hands that will take the time to go though all those BS links just to find one that works. Also I imagine you were smart enough to put a lengthy password with a good combination of letters and numbers. Most of the methods rely on the person using something familiar to there name or the stupid secret question they use.

As far as my not knowing what I am talking about - WOW I got a date factoid wrong - the point is to let people know what information is out there - so they can make the decision through some research to either change free webmail or how to pick a password that is harder to crack. If you don't like my opinion don't read it last time I checked this was a free board for posting ( | )

Don’t think it is that easy to hack into an email account either, unless a common password is used.

Guessing that people loose their accounts because they let someone trusted onto their computer for a few minutes that they should not have trusted, or they have downloaded some cutesy program that was really designed to send back passwords, or they tried out the hacking sites in the google search that ask for your email and password (suckers are born every day).

Something that know one has mentioned though, is that SP’s are loosing access to their accounts, and some are the same SPs that require detailed client information be sent by email.

I agree with those who have said Hotmail is hard to "hack". It is actually near impossible! In trhe whole time Hotmail has been around, I beleive there was one somewhat successful attempt about 3 years ago, but hey never got to the actual mailboxes..... For thise of you whom, think you are being "hacked" (man people love that term) it is probably your password they are getting. Those websites are TOTAL BS!

And on the topic of getting rid of your Hotmail account...If these people are "hacking" your account, do you reallt think the other, smaller web-based email services are as well secured as MS?

If you check some of the smaller companies eg www.ziplip.com
they are definitely more secure than hotmail. My point was that I don't understand the popularity of hotmail given their 2MB mail boxes and lot's of spam problems. It seems hackers are likely to target hotmail more than a less well known email website - whether they are succeeding or not is another issue.

If you do some shopping around you'll find there are many email companies out there that are offer more features and better security than hotmail.
