A boutique hotel I just inquired about having a $500 deposit on a credit card

Normally this is not a problem but I don't use a credit card any more

I use a visa debit card but the hotel won't take a deposit on that card

And won't take a cash deposit either

Hotels are getting picky ......I am not going to destroy the place just have some fun lol

You can kind of get away without a credit card, but it makes things harder than they should. I also believe that not having any credit cards would hurt your credit score too?

Or buy pre-paid Titanium mastercard at Money Mart. You can load it up to 10K and works always. My friend use it for everything.
Lots of places refuse prepaid cards regardless of how much is on it
Most of them say right on back of card "this is not a credit card"

They work for hotels too, check in AND incidental deposits. I don't use any of my personal credit cards for any hotel or any purchases related to my persona. I use my prepaid MasterCard from Cash Money.

I haven't been refused anywhere. High end hotels. Small purchases. Large ones up to 5K. Malls. Spas. Overseas. Online.

Simple and easy. I keep everything with this life separate and that card has yet to fail me anywhere.

It doesn't say anywhere that it isn't a real credit card. Maybe those obscure gift card ones do, but the Titanium Visa from Money Mart and MasterCard from Cash Money are fine.

Service fees are less than $10 a month. I pay $7 with mine. That's not a robbery in my opinion. No interest % fees, no contract fees or what have you. You should research it before assuming these places are crooked because that is definitely not the case, and I'm talking from extensive first hand experience.

It's all about the deposit. And that perception of ability to make pay. A hold is placed on the card for X amount. It's why the smaller denominations don't work.

And you would be surprised the amount of damge that can be done in a hotel with 2 people. Just the bed alone along with bedding can be destroyed by an amorous couple.

I've seen some shit (figuratively and literally left behind) in my time. And we charged them for it.

Most hotels even have a 250-500 charge just for smoking. And then there is a need for money held for room service and minibar.

7 dollars a month is not too bad if you use it all the time but infrequent users that's 84 dollars a year

But privacy has it's price

Bmo travel MasterCard is 6.95 a year but it says right on the card it's a pre paid card

I will check into the cash money MasterCard

I always respect the opinion and experience from Chloe

Not true. The fees on my Money Mart MasterCard are less than those on some of my credit cards from the banks.

But the idea of having a hobby MasterCard from cash money sounds secure to me

Just like having a secure phone

Td has a prepaid card you may want to consider. Fees are $2.99 for TD customers and $5.99 for non-customers. The other banks are sure to have them.

Keep in mind that prepaid cards are not credit cards even though they have Visa or MasterCard logos. The logos mean you can use them where Visa and MC are advertised including virtually any ATM.

Hmm, a lot of prepaid cards can't be used for online purchases - period. This includes prepaid Visa cards, Mastercards, and even prepaid Amex cards.

Further I notice that Money Mart cards make clear that their use in certain countries may be restricted by law, further that regular pre-authorized debit (PAD) transactions, where you authorize a company or organization to withdraw funds from your Card, are not permitted.

Would you care to list them? Genuinely curious because I've never been refused anywhere and I have one that I actively use everywhere, including internationally and online.

I know a lot of people say they aren't accepted but I'm wondering if this is from experience or simply hearsay.

Wow. I must be staying at the wrong hotels. :) I typically stay at Marriotts, Sheratons, business class type places. But also have stayed at Best Western, Holiday Inn etc.... Even slummed it one time at Motel 6 type of place..... I think it was even worse than an M6. But never had a deposit asked.

I've never had a hotel ask me for a deposit. The only common policy is some kind of cancellation terms that says if you change plans you have to tell them that day or they have the right to charge you for not showing up.

I don't think I've ever cancelled on the same day, so I'm not sure if they even charge you, or just give you a break and allow someone else to book the room.

They rarely ask you when you produce your credit card immediately upon check in. They just take the deposit automatically off your card and refund it back to you within 2-3 business days, sometimes less.

Sheraton/Hilton are pretty decent, within 24 hours sometimes. Same with the higher end chains. It all depends on how competent and diligent their accounting department is.

Incidental deposits are mandatory for your stay. Check your credit card statements if your curious.

Perhaps it matters what side of the border you are on. But as mentioned prepaid cards from all three of the big names: Visa, Mastercard, and Amex. Purchased at places such as Target, Walmart, and various brand Supermarkets have been refused by online merchants (not consistently but much of the time).

This is something I really seem to doubt, at least in my experience. It's fine in the CVS's in the states and every other main chain retailer I've been to, including Walmart and Target.

I treat it like a normal card, notify them when I am leaving the country, let them know where I am going and my length of stay, and it has been smooth sailing.
