You know, I refuse to even give one red cent to a homeless person unless they are blind or have no legs or something of that nature. I put people in quotations because I dont really consider them humans, they are social parasites really.

It really ticks me off when im waiting for the light to turn red and I see people handing out money to homeless crackheads, alcoholics, and the majority of homeless people who are just lazy. Also do not tell me that alcohol, crack is just as bad as blindness, alcohol and crack are controlled things, they took the liberty of smoking it and starting to drink now they must face the consequences. I don't care what drove them to do it, i really dont.

There are literally a hundred thousand things that homeless people who can function can do to get food, shelter, and clothing. There is welfare, food banks, homeless shelters, and by god why dont they fucking take a shower in some public bathroom, go to a local grocery store in china town or somewhere and offer to work for like $5.00 an hour cash under table? go work as a carny at the carnival, go clean the shit out of toilets. That beats begging for money any day.

I think China is a world leader in the way they handle things, olympics come in and they literally broom aside the homeless. I feel that is just and principle. I've observed homeless people in toronto several times, most of them are liars, and take that money you give them and go straight to get some crack.

Not to sound harsh, but one can't walk a block in Toronto without somebody asking for money. In addition to beggars, the streets are now lined with Sick Kids, Plan, Red Cross, World Vision, etc. canvassers.

Well I wouldn't condone brooming them aside, but I also very very rarely give to the homeless. Several downtown missions have signs on their windows asking people to not give spare change to anyone on the street, as it feeds their addictions. Shit I wish I could find the article discussing studies indicating that a ridiculous percentage of street beggars spend their "earnings" on addictive substances. Its hard sometimes, but not giving money is usually, or at least often, the best thing you can do for them - giving them your spare change, especially in winter, seems generous, but its hurtful. Poverty is sad though, no question.

That said, I normally give to the very old or the very handicapped. And have bought meals for a few as well, but very rarely. I think the better option is to donate your time to a mission, or give a donation to a shelter. Something I have yet to do though......

You guys are way too uptight. you have it, they don't, and you are complaining that they bother you for begging as you walk by? lol... how about just round them up and shoot them? I especially feel the anger from Wallstreet, he reminds me of the guy in "American Psycho" who is an elite banker by day, and goes out on the street to kill homeless people and hookers at night. he thisnks so highly of himself, and sees the homeless and hookers are scums of society and need to be elliminated.
I rarely give them anything, but they do not bother me. If I talk to one, I usually throw a dollar or two, if not I just walk pass, doesn't bother me at all. Why does it bother you so much? you have a problem.!

A homeless guy once told me that only in Toronto could a homeless person get fat from all the food available at missions and soup kitchens etc. The real problem is mental illness. A high percentage of people on the street should be in an institution or should be on their medication which they never take. These people would be hard pressed to work 2 hours at a minimum wage job so job creation is not the solution. We gotta get these folks back on their meds, since they would pretty much have to kill somebody to be institutionalized.

Well thats what I mean. Theres nothing wrong with giving to the blind, handicapped, mentally retarded, or people with no legs, arms, etc..

It is annoying to see more and more panhandlers, even in suburbia in front of Shoppers or at busy intersections.

A lot of them are YOUNG and probably stronger than me.

Cripes, my parents came here from worn-torn Europe and were called 'DPs', but worked their asses off and also thru enterprise, made a good life and paved the way for their children.

I've been duped by panhandlers, and some of them work in shifts with their cohorts.

However, I have donated to those who probably can't help themselves (gave $20 to an old lady smelling of urine who slept inside the lobby of a bank's ATM - I was getting cash for a SC visit and felt guilty to not donate).

I used to give money to pan handlers at red lights ... etc if I have some change in the car. But one day at a Tim Horton's drive thru I saw the young girl giving me change had one arm amputated. She smiled and had a great attitude to go with it. Initially I felt bad for this girl but then I thought she is stong and brave and work for her money. Since then everytime I see pan handlers I think of this girl, and refuse to give them money. I now just donate money annually to a charity.

One of my friends works at a small store on Queen West. He said that they have to pay these folks (from Quebec) not to block the entrance because it scares customers away.

I guess one could call the police to take care(wink wink) of the situation.

Save up the change one Would give to the homeless... wait until it's enough to but a downright OD toxic amount of drugs then give it to the most degenerate junkie you can find... Hopefully he buys more than he can handle & the money will actually do some good....

I get pissed at the young kids that sit on the off ramps begging. Just think we'll be relying on them to fund our CPP

Some things probably should be clarified. Surprisingly, a large percentage of homeless people in major cities which have a substantial cost of living actually could be productive members of society. They just can't afford the rent. I seem to remember reading a study about Calgary during its boom, and was horrified by the fact that 30% of the homeless in Calgary had jobs; they just couldn't come up with first and last month's rent. That being said, nobody would rent to you anyway if you had no permanent address. So the slope became very slippery once you lost your permanent residence. Even employment without a fixed address is hard.

As for cops taking care of the problem, you should try visiting Winnipeg. The cops used to take the troublemakers and drive them to the edge of town, and drop them off in the middle of winter. Until somebody died. Wasn't so funny anymore.

The chinese do a pretty good job in violating human rights. Go ask one of the 50,000 people who lost their homes when the government took them so they could build the Expo 2010 site.

Plan B is right; most of the homeless do have a mental illness. If they didn't, being homeless brings on mental illness. And then drug/alcohol addiction. Giving them money isn't a solution, but neither is kicking them while they're down. Until people recognize the shortcomings of all the solutions society has come up with, and push for something more comprehensive than a band-aid solution, it won't go away. By the way, ever notice how few asians (chinese, japanese, east indian, vietnamese, korean, etc.) are homeless? Their families would never let them fall that far. Something to think about...
