He'll play in the KHL make good coin, and be close to his family. Not going for the stanley cup but he'll be content i guess with being close to home and making a great living for his family.

There is something not right about this . If he plays in KHL then what is stopping any player who has a contract to just retire and go play in the KHL ? What happens if player thinks he is not getting paid enough

What is not right ?
Obviously he has some personal motivation for leaving $70 MM on the table
Possibly his family may be more comfortable in Russia.

You are questioning why a player who has a contract has the right to retire????

At this point you do not know if he wants to play in the KHL

If a player does not think he is getting paid well enough in the NHL he has every right to seek alternatives
The NHL does not have exclusive rights to a person relative to every league in the world
An NHL contract only stipulates which NHL team has rights to a players service in the NHL, not in the world

Won`t be a problem, playing in the K is not luxury like most NHL;ers are used to. Many rinks and dressing rooms are quite primitive, an exodus would have already happened as the league has been around long enough.

Most players want nuttin to do with the K.

Yahoo! Sports says that Kovalchuk will sign on with the KHL and make 20 million a year for the St. Petersburg team in that league.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-p...join-ska-could-earn-20-million-210237775.html

I wonder if the 77 million or so he leaves on the table gets counted against cap even though he's not playing or collecting money from an NHL team.
When Tim Thomas retired his 5 million counted against the cap and his rights were traded to the Islanders to help them reach the salary cap floor even though they never paid him a cent.
If that contract counts against player salaries the devils could trade the contract to a team that needs help reaching the cap floor and that team would get credit for 77 million dollars of payments to players without having to pay a cent.

I think the point is that he is "under contract". By playing in the KHL, he is not fulfilling his agreement. Imagine if someone contracted a person for a service(such as building a house or public appearances) and halfway through his contract, this person quits to service someone else. Isn't that a lawsuit? If a player is not required to fulfill his agreement, why should owners fulfill theirs?

Anyway, this reminds me back in the days when NHL players would sign a contract only to decide that they are not being paid enough and hold out while still under contract. The owners would relent and renegotiate under pressure. This shit happened frequently until the Ottawa Senators refused to take Yashins crap for a second time(they relented the first time). Ottawa sued Yashin and won. NHLPA were actually ok with the fact that Yashin lost since, had he won, it would give the owners an argument to terminate a players contract if they feel that he's not worth his contract.

As for the Devils cap, they will have a 250K(maybe 300K) hit until 2025. It's just a small hit but it's for a long period. What really hurts is the 2014 first round pick that they lost due to the Kovalchuk signing. With the lost of some firepower and an aging Brodeur, that first round pick may be a high one.

Wow ! How convenient.
Devils are off the hook for a ridiculous contract.

So if a player in the KHL wants out he just has to retire.
Then he can come to the NHL.

I thought there was an agreement in place between the NHL and the KHL about crap like this
