On my old Sony Vaio, there was a feature called a "vault" where I could store all of my private collections of dirty photo's and movies. It worked well. A few years ago, I bought an iMac and I have been using MacHider, which works reasonably well, ie.it is an app that hides everything under a protected password.

Recently, I got a notice that the app is no longer being supported. What is the best Mac friendly technology or app to protect others from seeing these files. I'm hoping that my Terbite friends have similar problems and solutions. Thank you.

You can partition your HD to create an encrypted and password protected partition that will appear as a separate disk volume on your desktop. Use the Disk Utility to do this. I did this several years and operating systems ago - but they still work under High Sierra. You could also do this with a portable disk so that only you could view the contents. That might be a better way to go, since I don't know of a way to increase the partition size after you've created the encrypted volume. When you want to view the contents of the disk you need to mount it first - using your password. Just remember to unmount the disk before you log off or it will be open on your desktop for all to access.

Dear essguy...thank you for your response. But I bought an iMac because I don't know how to partition HDs or use a Disk Utility, and I choose to remain uninformed about what appear to be complex technical solutions. Please, are there simpler solutions for simpletons like me with dirty pictures and videos?

option: create a new user and have a separate password. put all your smut and secret plans to take over the world in that user's documents folder. Do not put into pictures. Now, no one can access them but you.

Thanks all. I'm currently trialing MacPaw's Hider 2, which seems to working OK. Will take a look at veracrypt as well.

Quick and easy hide in plain sight:

1) Give your secret folder a boring custom icon
2) Give it an uninteresting name, perhaps referring to something obsolete like 'PwrBkClone'. Add the extension .app to the end of the name
3) Put it somewhere people wouldn't be surprised to see an app, like your Applications Folder

If and when others click on PwrBkClone.app nothing will happen; the hope is they'll lose interest. You will right click on it and select "View package contents" from the drop down menu when you want to look at what's in it.

I haven't been on Terb for a while, but I did buy MacHider 2 and it works well. The only drawback is that since everything is encrypted, large video files take a while to lock and unlock...photos and other files are very fast.
