We are big on HP laser printers.

One, a P2015 that has two trays and a duplexer I bought on Dufferin a bit north of Queen about 10 years ago for $100 and maybe $70 in toners over the 10 years.
Used to live on the home network, but a swap of ISP and domain format and find I need jet direct software to reconfig it. .
Old version on a now dead computer and new from the web version wants you to sign up with HP before it will do anything. Screw that

Then a HP multifunction print/copy/scan/fax used from office tossing it for a yanked out dead USB port in 2015. A LJ2052.
I can configure IP from its lcd screen so now it is the home network printer.

We are doing estate work for sister in law who passed without a will.
The copier function has been very useful in this paperwork mess.
Maybe $80 in toners for this since we have had this in the house.

I use lasers only now, any inkjet is very expensive and they dry up.

Got a Brother HL- 2390dw laser printer years ago that works great and will never go back to inkjet printers.
Printed 100s of pages so far on the original starter toner that came with it and a couple days ago it reported toner is finally getting low.
Guess will have to get a new toner cartridge soon.

Quite a bargain compared to any inkjet printer I had before.

I am using Canon Pixma G7020 printer. It uses actual ink not toners. Connects by wireless to 4 computers and prints brilliant colours flawlessly. There is a software fix to soften the ink when it hardens

Wondering the same thing?
Seems the knock off toner cartridges can run 50% cheaper but of course Brother highly recommends using only Brother toner cartridges for best results.

To be fair, you can still buy Office as a 1-time purchase i.e. no subscription and there are tons of legit license key web-sites out there to get the cost down even more. Or use free alternatives like Google Docs or Libre Office.

I'm a freelancer and use Adobe apps reguarly. I prefer the subscription model because their apps used to cost thousands. That made it out of reach for most people even if they just wanted to learn the apps. Today, I can turn the subscription on or off when I need it. Or I can "cancel" the plan at any time to get a cheaper price. I can do this inside the software with no need to be on hold or chat with support. The current plan is about $80 / month, but I can get it down to less than $40. I can easily cover that cost with the money I bring in and it's also a deductible business expense.

Generally, if you're on a subscription you can contact support to get them to lower the price. They would rather give you a discount instead of losing you as a paying customer.

OnlyOffice, LibreOffice, I hesitate suggesting GDocs (not a Gugulag fan).

25 years ago HPs were good, but now I think Brother is the best value. I'm a guy who needs 11x17 too. I'd buy a Canon only if I need the image quality. You pay for that.

I use to use HP but started running into problems. I then used a big Brother with lots of functionality but it was flakey. When Brother was having a tantrum and I needed a printer, I ran out and bought a Canon TR4527 that was on sale. It does two sided printing, (Fax - never used it) and accommodates large ink cartridges. I tried buying cheap ink cartridges but they gave weird messaging and inconsistent results. I don't use the printer as much as the document scanner so I figured I'd get robbed (~$45 Canon cartridge) so I had a reliable printer when I needed it.

My only problem with toner was to get colour was expensive. I don't print as much printed words as I do engineering illustrations which colour is desirable. Technology moves so fast - is colour toner printers available for general use. How much do you pay for toner cartridges ?

If you are doing critical photo printing, you have no choice but to use inkjet for quality. Lasers are cheaper to run, however.
