Category 5, New Orleans evacuated

The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 25% of domestic oil production in the US. As if gas prices weren't high enough already.

Also of concern is fraudulent insurance companies, scam artists, and hotels charging max rates to cash in on the immediate demand.

New Orleans is already 10 feet under sea level. If Katrina is as bad as they say, the press is calling for a New Atlantis.

Not all of it, but many parts are. The Mayor of New Orleans described it as living in a bowl, with the average at six feet below sea level, which is still plenty. Hopefully the levee system that has been upgraded since the 1960's will hold off the worst of it, if it is not a direct hit. Ironically, landfall from the Gulf would not be as devastating as it would be if the hurricane came in from the east, across Lake Pontchartrain.

they are using the superdome as a shelter, there will be over 15000ppl in the place & they dont know for sure if the building can stand up to the force of a Cat 5 hurricane-i dont know if it's desperation or stupidity,if the building cant stand the force of Katrina there will be deaths in the 1000s-can you say tsunami death totals all over again

Mayor has ordered everyone to evacuate except for hospitals, hotels and emergency services... anyone who is unable to evacuate, such as the poor, elderly or disabled are asked to goto the Superdome... 50,000 people in the superdome expected....the Superdome sits at 6 feet below sea level....25 foot storm surge is possible....am I missing something ? ....50,000 people swimming in the superdome seems like a possibility doesn't it ?

Where is the Superdome located in relation to downtown?

Inside the Superdome is probably a hell of a lot safer than outside it. But that's not saying a whole lot. CNN is saying officials are worried about people being caught in gridlock on the highways when the storm hits.

I believe the Superdome is located more or less beside the airport. Airport to downtown New Orleans is a bit further than Pearson to downtown Toronto.
Found it, pretty close to downtiown. What's amazing is that if you look at a map of southern Louisiana, the entire area from Baton Pouge down to New Orleans, covering hundreds of square miles, is nearly all designated as swampland.

Most of New Or lies 6-9 feet below sea level. They built a levee(sp?) that will handle 7-10 foot storm surges......Katrina ( sexy name eh ??) could bring 20-28 foot storm surges....run away fasssst

IMHO - a bad place to be in category 5 hurricane.
Maybe xarir, but what are the alternatives for the sick, elderly, homeless, etc.? If the Superdome is the most stable and solidly built structure in the city, then I guess it's the best they can come up with. I agree it's not ideal, but I'd rather be there than in the Bourbon St. hotel I was in last September, for safety's sake. If anyone is just now (10pm CST Sunday) just thinking about leaving town, they'll never make it with the gridlock. This storm is immense -- almost the size of Florida.
