That's why you put the home router in place. It hides all the systems behind a single IP that rogers gives out. All of the people using 192.168.1 at home - that's why. Rogers never sees those IP's, and just knows the single one it gave out.

I am going to have to go back and read some of these suggestions again.....

so it seems that when I try and use a thrid machine things crap out

but here's the weird part so laptop 1 works consistantly

laptop 2 and xbox 360 seems only one works at a time

took laptop 1 into the basement and used the xbox plug and it works fine

so I wonder if it has something to do with the xbox itself? is there a manual setting I should put on it? should i set the xbox to the same ip address and what not as laptop 1? Will that be a problem if laptop and xbox are on at the same time with the same ip address?

I am really feeling in over my head

oh and before all this I was using a dlink dir-825 with laptop 1 and 2 via ethernet and ps3, wii, xbox 360, apple tv, android phone all hooked to the wi fi never had any problems in about 2 years

Ok, what is happening here....

Before, when you were using the DLR-825 it was taking a single IP from Rogers and then using Network Address Translation (NAT) served the traffic to the device that requested it on your home network. These were issued IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

After you took the DLR-825 out, all your computers and devices are connected to the Rogers network segment. When a DHCP request is issued by a computer it will go through to Rogers DHCP servers and these will issue a maximum of two IP addresses - hence the inconsistency you get.

Dont set a static IP for anything, if you end up with two devices with the same IP address you will get an IP conflict and one or both of the devices will disable themselves.

The easiest solution is to leave the computers and consoles plugged into the switches as they are now, but unplug the cable that goes from the basement switch to the upstairs switch. Also unplug your Rogers modem from the upstairs switch. Put your DLR-825 alongside the upstairs switch, and connect the network cable ffrom the Rogers modem to the Internet port on the DLR-825. Plug your upstairs and downstairs switches into LAN ports 1 and 2 of the DLR-825. Power on and configure the DLR-825 if you need to. Reboot all your computers and consoles and all should be good again.

Okay so if I'm reading this right

flow goes 1) cable model connected to 2) dlr 825 then 3a) upstairs switch and 3b) downstairs switch

I have been monkeying around with the 825 can't find the install disk that it came with it and my control panel is not showing the program to control it. I think if memory serves that I had installed that software onto the old desktop that I ran into the ground. hd stopped working and the barebones were not worth salvaging.

Anyways, went to d link website and could only find
a) a utility called shareport which is for managing usb stuff
b) a web based method of configing the 825..... it recognizes the same password that was on the 825 but when I try to disable the wi fi it won't let me save the changes.

Been at this most of the day off and on will take a break and try and do this tomorrow.

Worst case scenario..... if I can't reconfig the 825

I have a dir 655 could that be used in it's place? in tearing apart the house looking for hte start up disk I found the one for the older 655

Or should I get this... http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1046_365&item_id=042793

so that I can have faster gigabit ethernet ports and just shut off the wi fi

or is this a better option as I don't even want the wi fi so why pay for it....
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=27_1046_365&item_id=040444

use that in places of the 825

I have been replacing most of the cables in the house with cat 6. I know that the performance boost depends on applications and the spd of the internet to begin with but once I get the network up and running future projects will invovle media streaming..... as of right now I have been using external hds or 16 gb memory sticks.... again just trying to move away from wi fi.

I know most people probably think I am silly for doing all this as I probably won't notice a ton of difference and the health risks of wi fi are listed as inconclusive and small at best.

On the pro side I will say that netflix is so much better on a wired connection.

CAT6 is for 10gbe. You're gear is only 1gbe. If you're running it great, just don't expect it to make a difference.

TheDr is correct. cablemodem.> router.> and plug both switches into router.

You don't need the startup disk. What I'd recommend you do is reset the 825. Just hold down the reset button with a pen for 20seconds or so.. until you see all the lights blink and release it. That will put it back to factory default.
Once that's done.

-goto start. run. type cmd. hit enter. will bring you to the command prompt. type ipconfig hit enter
-see the number beside Default Gateway. 192.x.x.x likely 192.168.1.1 type that into your browser. Use Internet Explorer.
-login. should be admin and no password
-click on setup. then wireless settings. then Manual Wireless Network Setup
-then untick the checkbox beside both items that says Enable Wireless.
-click the save settings button
-click tools , system check, then Reboot the device.
-login again check to make sure the wireless is still unchecked.

Nah I know the price difference between cat6 and 5 was minimal so I figured I only want to run wires once and hopefully not have to do it again so why not use the highest rated wire.

I tried that except I used the dlink support website and ended up at a screen where it said admin and password.... entered the old password and went to uncheck those two boxes

Where I got stuck was the saving part. It wouldn't allow me to save it.

I will try it again. except this time use the reset button.

Sweet jesus had the laptops (1 and 2), plus xbox and ps3 accessing the internet all at the same time thanks to using the

modem to router to switch combo!

will add the second switch in the basement tomorrow as I had disconnected it

but now that I know the system is working I can put the second switch back in!

SWEET! Both switches are now working!

Damn those sales guys at Canada Computers and Staples. They were so nonchalant about saying yeah that will work without asking any questions. Without the knowledge of rogers giving me two ip addresses and the use of a true router to hide the switches behind I would have been banging my head for who knows how long.

Anyways, many thanks.

Next job..... run a cable to the upstairs and use a third switch.
