I moved to Toronto over a year ago from the United States, and drove my car with all my belongings.

Since then, I have not registered my vehicle in Canada because the insurance was too high. I need to get rid of it immediately. I was told that I would have to have the car for at least one year no matter what, so I have held on to it, driving it without insurance. I have almost got into several acccidents.

Since it is an American car, I am not sure if it is easy to get rid of it or sell it. It is a piece of crap (1995 Ford escort with some damage). The car runs pretty good though.

What are my options?

I was thinking of:

1)Driving it to the US and junking/selling it.
2)Junking it in Toronto (is this possible?)
3)Auctionining in on Ebay
4)Abandoning it in a forest (seriously)

I need your advice ASAP. The landlord has recently refused me parking unless I can come up with proof of insurance, and I am getting ticketed each day for parking on the street. So far I have received hundreds of dollars in parking tickets. Please help.

VISITORS AND TOURISTS TO CANADA

Under Section 7(1)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, a motor vehicle may be admitted temporarily into Canada without complying with the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations if it is to be used exclusively by a person entering Canada as a visitor or a person passing through Canada to another country. Persons entering under a work permit or student visa will be considered as visitors for the application of this section of the Act. Any change in the status of the person entering the vehicle may invalidate the use of this section of the Act. The vehicle cannot be sold or otherwise disposed of while in Canada and cannot remain in Canada for a period longer than the time constraints listed on the work permit, student visa or any other Customs documents. Once these time limits are exceeded, the vehicle no longer qualifies for temporary entry under section 7(1)(b) of the Act and must be exported. As the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency also has requirements concerning the importation of vehicles, you may contact them at the address listed below.

Thanks for the advice guys. I emailed Standard to see whether they will accept my car as scrap. If not, I will try to sneak it back in to the US this winter.

Just to update you on my story...

I drove this morning all the way to Scarborough to Standard Wrecking and they paid me 50 bucks for my car!!

I tried to get 60 bucks, but they said no. It was at least worth a try. The bad thing is that I just filled the tank a few days ago with 30 dollars of gas, and got new brakes just a while ago, which set me back 600 dollars. Oh well.

Anyway, I'm finally glad to get rid of it. I'll be using the ttc from now on, but at least I don't have to worry about being pulled over.

Thanks, Sheik!

You should have driven your car a few times around the block just to get your money's worth on the gas!!!

Yeah, but what if a cop was watching me drive around and around? I would have been pulled over and fined $5,000!

Should have donated to a school. They would have given you a tax receipt.

Either your car is in really bad shape or that cop would have to be a huge dickhead to do that!!!!
