I have a paid subscription with Bell for HD service with all the premium channels and 4 recievers. each receiver is in a different geographic location and we all split the bill 4 ways. Been doing so for years and works great. Only rule to follow is no pay per view amongst the group and all is cherry.

Works with other providers as well. For example, I have a dish network receiver from the US that I split with a friend in chicago. works perfectly...

I was unaware that 2 geographic locations is allowed. The user manual I have clearly states one and one only - each geographic location needs to be a separate service. Has this changed?
you read the manual ?

Dude! Bell is only interested in having the ability to bill you twice instead of once. Fuck the manual, fuck Bell. It is currently impossible for Bell to know where the receiver is located when it is NOT connected to a phone line.

Fuck Bell.

Hey - I get that you can DO IT. What the OP seemed to be suggesting was that Bell actually *allows* it. Based on the responses I am getting, I would say that the assertion by the OP is wrong. There is a difference between what you can do with the technology and what your contractual agreement with Bell actually allows you to do.

If you are ignoring the end user agreement then it does not really matter whether you do 2 georgraphic locations or 10. Although I suspect that eventually, they may wonder why you have 10 receivers -- assuming they bother to check.
I believe Bell limits each client to a maximum of six receivers

I sub to bell and I get the most out of them I possibly can. I have six receivers four are HD and two 3100s. Four are hooked up at my house (never permanently connect up the phone line except to activate it initially, once activated disconnect it and take the receiver where ever you want). Bell will allow you to take a receiver to the cottage, despite what it says in the manual. You just have to prove it's YOUR cottage with YOUR name on a phone bill or utility...etc. Not mom and dads cottage YOURS. That said, they have no way of knowing where the receiver is unless you connect it to the phone or internet.

My daughter uses one of our units at school.

As for cable...I hate bell, but I hated Rogers more!!! Besides the compression on Rogers is huge compared to Bell. Bell does it too, but the picture on Rogers really sucks. I don't know about Shaw. You cant take your Bell receiver to Florida, since they spot beamed their sats. Best you can do is reception in the Carolinas and north I think. Not an issue with Shaw.

For the best HD, get an antenna if you are in the Toronto area...there are 27 channels up for grabs and most are in superb clear uncompressed HD. The days of crappy analogue signals are gone (well almost). Digital signals are either thee or they're not...no snow!

Soon we'll have another choice anyway...check this out for 2011.

I was talking to a stranger at an electronic store and he uses a $10 antenna but he lives up in Richmond Hill or somewhere like that. Not sure how good an antenna is in downtown. Also, wouldn't the neighbours think you are a bloody cheapskate if they see an antenna on your roof?

A couple of notes about the Bell system. There are actually TWO bell satellites that are received on one dish with the use of a dual LNB. When you have multiple receivers in the house, bell runs the signal into a special "block" and then into the house. The block deals with the issue of watching TV with two different receivers with each one wanting to view a different transponder on the Sat ( one vertical polarization, one horizontal polarization ) I don't know how it works, but that's the way a factory install makes it work for that scenario. That's why three or four receivers can use one dish without a problem. The issue of using a receiver on another location is minimalized as it is usually the only receiver hooked to the dish. Also, 90% of the comercial programming is one one sat, the other contains mainly Asian and secondary cultural programming. The question of loss of signal in bad weather is related to the competence of the installer. On a clear day, if the dish is swung to a 70 % signal strength, you'll get a great picture. When it rains hard or snows...... If the Tech actually spent the time and tweaked it up into the 90% range, it'd take a hurricain to make it pixelate and go out. Also the dishes are stamped POS's .. I had one that wouldn't give me a great signal, no matter what I did. I was tweaking it and went to elevate the dish by lifting up on the LNB arm, the signal got better, even though the dish didn't move... so I loosened the retaining bolts and and jamed a piece of door shim under the lower LNB mount.. 15% gain in signal strenght. Then I disconnected the LNB and welded the damn thing in that spot with a MIG welder. Never had a reception issue again..

But seriously, just get a second dish and receiver and do what you want with them. Bell is happy enough that you are actually paying your bill, that they will never bother you about it.

Not quite true. Bell have an entire department, "Signal verification" that call paying Customers and hasle them about receivers on their accounts.

If you have 3 or more receivers, you will be on the list of Customers to call, now with 1.6 million Customers, it could be a while before they call you but your ARE on that list.

When they call, they will want information off EVERY active receiver on your account, if you CANNOT provide this info, they can and do, deactivate any receivers that you cannot provide information from. They will want you to go the the TV connected to the Receiver and punch in MENU, 6, 1, 3, this gets you to the 'system info' screen, they will then request the details contained alongside the "Location ID". They can change this at a moments notice. Without access to this info, they can deactivate the box.

Now, as stated before, unless a phone line is connected, Bell do not know where the receiver is, period but if you have them in multiple locations, just be aware.

As for a Cottage, etc, the official line is that only 1 location can be active at any one time, so you are expected to call Bell and tell them you are going to the Cottage, so they can disable receivers at your house, then as you head home, you are once again expected to call and have the House receivers activated and the Cottage one deactivated. What a crock......

Just get a second Dish, try to use the same setup as at your main location, otherwise you will need to run a "Check Switch" every time you move a receiver.
