Ok, I am now thoroughly confused. I took my little 8 year old niece to buy her a hockey helmet. I asked the store if she could also wear this same helmet for skiing and biking and was told NO. I would have to buy 3 DIFFERENT HELMETS! Isn't a helmet a helmet a helmet:confused:?

Have you ever considered wearing one all the time, or do you already.

They are designed with different impact protection areas as the head injury caused by a bicycle fall would be much different than that caused by a flying hockey puck, or from a skiing accident.
The salesman said that even one fall with a bike helmet means the helmet must be replaced because there might be damage to the helmet not visible to the eye. BTW: Have you ever seen Chris Cheilios' hockey helmet? I think that thing must be 20 years old.

same rule for motorcycle helmets....One major blunt force and it needs to be replaced, or alternately at least every 5 years. i do wear my downhill skiing helmet when i ride my horse

I hope you don't know how well it works ... I mean I hope you've never had an impact accident. :)
Yep, hit trees while both skiing and biking. The helmet is like new, my skull is intact, and according to my buddies I had no personality changes since my accidents. Gotta be working then :) Have you had some bad experience in the past?

no but I have had enough experience with brain injury through my other work to know I never, ever want to take that chance. Be careful :)
I will be, thank you :). No matter how careful one is, falling is a part of most such activities. I completely agree with you - an adequate helmet is required. Mine seemed to work in both cases, but it might be a good idea to replace it to ensure structural integrity.

welcome :)
I agree falling when properly equipped can actually be kinda fun! I want to get a go-pro camera for the top of my helmet this year ... and the clips to attach to handlebars, kayak, etc. There were some awesome shots of us flyin around on my white water rafting trip. If we have to wear a helmet may as well attach a camera to it and film all the fun :D

Henrys carries that make. There is one in Barrie.

He's not just giving you a sales pitch - he's right. Even with no impact issues a bike helmet should be replaced every few years ... the heat from the sun among other things weakens them. Better to be safe than sorry ;)
This is correct. Bike helmets work like the fender of a car--they absorb the impact by crumpling / destroying themselves. If you drop it, some of the material inside the skin of the helmet will have crumpled and will no longer be protecting your head.

That's a great idea actually. Lots of people were wearing them on the ski slopes last week. I'm waiting on the black edition that just came out recently to become available. So far it's out of stock everywhere - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/895414-REG/GoPro_HERO3_Black_Edition.html

I know this is all the case for motorcycle helmets as even a small drop can dramatically reduce the protection it provides. This is why you don't see people sitting their helmets on the bike seats anymore - that small drop could cost you several hundred bucks.

Is it recommended to wear the same helmet for both activities (skiing and horseback riding)?
i find the quality of the ski helmets is superior to that of the horse riding gear, plus for winter riding, its nice to have the ear flaps/warmers which the ski helmets offer

Understanding the whole helmet marketing info versus actual research information is very difficult. A Engineer collegue has done a significant amount of research over the years. At one time he was convinced that a hockey helmet was best for biking. After further research he is now wearing a Bern bike helmet. I have a Bern bike helmet and it certainly feels safer than any other bike helmet I have worn. I also have an expensive hockey helmet - I'm old and I can barely skate. My wife has both the Bern bike helmet and a very good hockey helmet. See finds the hockey helmet better for falling suddenly and hitting one's head. Last 4 years ago she fell while biking, on ice, wearing a bike helmet. Well it wasn't on ice but the road had patches of black ice. She sustained a minor concussion from that fall, her helmet fit and you could see where it hit the road but no visible damage. Last year she fell while skating with her hockey helmet on, at a very similar acceleration to the bike suddenly sliding out sideways and your head, being on the long end of the lever, picking up speed rapidly before striking the pavement. That clunk produced a head injury and fear of a concussion but all was okay.

Then just yesterday she fell while skating, in a similar fashion to last year, while wearing her Bern bike helmet. That similar clunk to last year's skating fall, produced a minor concussion. This accident is like the rain drop falling on a leaf in the Amazon - creating a huricane somewhere - like fractal theory. I was to have three days to work hard and possibly visit on of my ATFs in the evening. How I am on call for random meals, etc.

From my limited perspective, I suggest the hockey helmet seems a better solution for accidents involving one's head suddenly striking a hard surface like ice or pavement.

The other thing I can't understand is why bike helmets are not mandatory in the Province? When I moved from B.C. in 1998, I couldn't understand why people were being so reckless. Naturally, I now often forget my helmet while biking and I never wear my hockey helmet for skating unless I am in full gear. Likely not the best approach.

One other thing, what about pedestrians being mowed down by cyclists, what is the best helmet for walking? A neighbor was struck by a cyclist running a red and fractured his skull. Luckily she has some kind of tenure at one of the higher learning institutes so her seemingly spaced outness doesn't seem to be noticed.
