I bought mine at a discount electronics store in Bramalea city center for 20 bucks. It works great.

You can also try Pacific mall. I'm sure you can find one cheap. Don't get conned into buying an overpriced moster cable or anything like that. It's a total waste of money.

I bought 2 6ft HDMI cables from an Ontario vendor today on Ebay for $18 in total (taxes included) with free shipping.

There is no point buying expensive HDMI cables as there is no performance upgrade.
Of course there is. Cheaper (non 1.3) cables will not be able to support certain features or bandwidth. You should know what you are buying, but all HDMI cables are not the same.

I assumed the OP would have at least a simple knowledge of what they were looking for in a cable.

The real problem is more likely to be the other way around. HDTV's and DVD players that came out before V1.3 was introduced and don't support V1.3.

You would have to be pretty unlucky to run into old cable stock.

I don't think so at all. If they are unmarked you do not know what you are getting, and most likely is people are simply not pushing the cable. People are running 480p and marvelling at their hidef signal over HDMI (yeah, I know :)
