Have you invested in a high definition DVD format?

I heard that blu ray dvds are selling more copies than hd dvd..... not sure about the players themselves.

Is it true that the xbox 360 requires you to buy something extra to watch hd dvds?

I'm rooting for blu ray since I have a ps3.

I vote for 8.5gb rips of bluray and hddvd movies downloaded off newsgroups until the movies average ~$20 or less per and the players $200 or so (toshiba hddvd players below $300 regularly now).

Remember, Sony has had problems in the past with their proprietary hardware such as Betamax tapes and Minidiscs.

Wonder if they could win this one as they have alot of support from studios and hardware manufacturers.

I'm not really impressed with either format, so I'll wait till the 3-D format comes along.
That being said if I were to get one it would be Blu-Ray. I would get a Sony PS3 w/60GB. @~$500US right now. It's probably the best deal. You get a Blu-Ray player, a 3.2Mhz PC w/wi-fi wireless, and it plays games, all for ~$500, I think it's a steal at that price.

Heres the features:

Sony PlayStation®3 (60GB)

60GB hard drive: This PS3 console includes Memory Stick/ SD/ CompactFlash slots, Wi-Fi capability and a 60GB hard disk drive (HDD).

Blu-ray: This next-generation media format delivers the ultimate high-definition entertainment. With more than five times the storage capacity of standard DVD, Blu-ray offers gamers larger, more interactive and sophisticated environments to immerse themselves in. The PS3 is the only console with a built-in Blu-ray player.

HDMI: High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) offers an all-digital audio and video interface between any compatible device, such as DVD players, A/V receivers and other HDMI compatible monitors.

Cell Broadband engine: Sony has created an advanced microprocessor unlike any other. Up to eight cores help balance the processor's workload for more powerful and efficient performance.

Backward compatible: In conjunction with PS3's hundreds of new titles, you can play thousands of PS1 and PS2 games as well as connect your PSP for gameplay and data transfer. Also, play your DVDs and CDs on the PS3.

Online compatibility: Sony is offering an online option with their PS3 that will remain free to users*.

Multi-axis motion sensing: Found in the new PS3 controllers, the multi-axis motion sensing system provides seamless interactive operation as well as the ability to maneuver the controller as a natural extension of your body.

Just read an article(can't remember where)that said Porn might be the deciding factor as to who wins. Seems HD-DVD has been embraced by the Porn Industry. Sony hasn't made their Blu-Ray technology available to the Porn Studios until recently. The article said that Porn was a major factor for VHS prevailing over Beta.

I'm going to wait to see who comes out on top.

Yeah, dvdfile.com had an article that suggested porn could be the deciding factor.

I'm not so sure. Porn was a major influence in the videotape days, when home players opened up a world of dirty movies to people who didn't want to join the trenchcoat crowd in the theatres. But it's hard to imagine porn having the same type of influence in the high-definition world.

If porn does make a difference in the format wars, it will likely be in Japan, as the production values in Japanese porn are much higher than what you see in the U.S.

Porn

I read that Sony said to the porn industry to come on down.
It seems that Sony will let anyone use their format without questions.

3D is the way to go.

From the start I always thought VHS had the advantage over Beta because it held more data. Sure Beta, by the specs, had better quality but not really that noticeable to most people. I jumped on VHS from the start.

I am on the Blu-Ray side being a PS3 owner and believe me those guys who say there is no difference rent Black Hawk Down on blu-ray and watch the explosions in high def and listen to the uncompressed PCM, then tell me there is no difference between that and standard dvds

As for the porn industry, it wont decide it this time like it did the VHS-Beta battle, porn is readily available on the net sites and torrents, honestily how many people buy dvd porn compared to downloading it.

I could really care less who wins in the long run. By the time a winner is decided the price of both players will have dropped significantly, and as I already have a PS3 I would only have to buy a new player if HD DVD won the war.

the PS3 blu-ray is a cheap version of all that blu-ray is capable of.

the lack of hi performance blu-ray at an affordable price leads me to question the long term durability of the product.

Why worry about the long term durability of the product?
In five years who knows what may be out.
By then 3D should be perfected with the advances being made.
