I'd have to say that texting while driving is pretty much universally condemned on TERB.

Having said that, I am interested in an anonymous poll in which it is a yes or no. Have you texted while driving in the last year?

I answered yes, but very rarely. Now I have a hands free setup through Apple car play.

Hey. I just realized a flaw in my poll.

You are not allowed to vote if you do not drive.

I have yet to come up with anything so important that I have to reply a text...I always though if something important that needs to be addressed, the person would call instead of text.

I have, but I was going very slow, does that still count??

I'm not going to do it now anymore though, the penalty is too steep

Yeah, the school zones are handy with their lower speed limits. Texts can be much longer.

I had to respond yes. I've texted in the driveway and pulled over to text - I'm not coordinated enough to read and drive in a moving car. I have used voice text at a red light discretely to say 'be there in 5 minutes' which I can do without looking at the phone on the seat. Longer trips I do activate the Android auto which reads and responds to texts hands free.

You're poll question should read: Have you texted while in motion?

I don't text while my car is moving, but I'm guilty of reading or sending the odd quick text while safely stopped at a traffic light.

I have yet to come up with anything so important that I have to reply a text...I always though if something important that needs to be addressed, the person would call instead of text.
Talking on the phone, hands-free or not while driving is infinitely more dangerous/distracting than texting while stopped at a traffic light. I would much rather have people text me so that I may read them when it's safe to do so, than bothering me with a distracting phone call when I'm driving.

With a modern smartphone, there is absolutely no need to take your hands off the wheel to text. Simply use text/speech applications and hands free. Of course, even that can be distracting, but it's far less intrusive than trying to hold your phone, typing with one thumb, while driving. If you don't have this - then put your phone in the glove box to take away any temptation. There is absolutely NO text in the world that can't wait the 10 minutes for you to find an exit or a place to park to respond.

New York State is so far ahead of Ontario when it comes to this.

They have these rest areas/text areas throughout the state. They're located between the usual service stations. Something that would be very useful on the 400 series highways.

I know it's not high-speed, but certainly high-volume... at least they have a "text parking lot" at Pearson airport.

I have in the past. Did it once or twice and it kinda scared me to take my eyes off the road for that long. Now I turn my phone off once I get in the car.

If you're including being stopped at a red light, then yes, though rarely. We're talking like a "yes/no" answer or an ETA. Far more often is that I'll read a quick text while stopped at a light.
What I never do is text or read a text while my vehicle is moving. That's where the danger lies and I fully recognize that.
