Have any of you bought property in Colombia?

Two places of interest, Medellin and Cartegena.

Is it worth buying real estate or better to just rent while there? Have you made a return on your investment (appreciation/airbnb)?

Although cheap compared to prices here, I'm not sure buying property in the third world is wise.

I find the climate in Cartegena a bit too hot, though I like the culture.

Prostitution is legal so hookers are literally everywhere and there is a carefree attitude towards it by all. It's amazing to see it coexist with the mainstream out in the open without issue.

$200 USD to have a bombshell for an entire night is as good as it gets. They live well (perhaps better than some Canadians) considering that a monthly wage in Colombian is around $300 USD.

Going to visit Medellin next trip to Colombia as the weather is better (25 - 30 degrees) and all the fun that can be had in a large urban city.

Distance rental property ( ABNB) is harder than rental here in Canada.
Owners always believe that renters will behave themselves.

I know a lady that after 33 times renting a room, she finally got hit / damage.
Most renters don't care what they break because they believe its their right to do it.
Your renter will rent it out for more.

Even if you have a caretaker he will rip you off. I know a guy whose parents did this from here and ABNB was in Spain. Caretaker / custodian a clown.

Gated commy a bit worse.

I would just rent while there on vacation. To much stress worrying about people and natural disasters. My ex-coworker had to worry about natural disasters on his place in Florida.

You're right. Keep all assets in the First World and use fun money everywhere else.

According to this article, there were 37 violent tourist murders in 2023 in Medellin, and this year is on track for 61 which is more than one tourist murdered per week.

Kidnappings still occur per this article.

I travel with friends who are street savvy. We don't look like easy targets and we always stay within the safe zones.

None of us are looking for love or dating. Good food, good sex, relaxation, and we're happy.

I'm looking forward to taking a trip to Medellin sooner than later.

There is no way I would be a slum lord in Canada and certainly not in a foreign country.

If you don't speak any Spanish, I wouldn't recommend Cartagena, unless you're with a friend(s) that speaks it.

The locals don't speak English. Probably the same in Medellin and the rest of Colombia.

A translation app can get you by but that's tedious and frustrating.

South America is not like travelling Western Europe where most people speak English as a second language.
